It could be that there’s some extra help info for the first tip you create. That would work pretty nicely I think.

Yes, but perhaps with some way of accessing that again in the future if needed? If people only post tips occasionally they may want to review the guidance before doing their second / third / etc.?

Fair point. Maybe after the first time there is a little help icon that can be clicked on to trigger the walk through.

They aren't showing anywhere just yet. They will show in several spots around the site once it's all put live.

1. The map and planner when people are setting up new trips.
2. The guide articles for places they are relevant to
3. People's home page feed - people who are following you and also people who are following the place the tip is for. ie.. someone who is travelling to Paris will likely get Paris tips in their feed occasionally.
4. They will be able to be attached to blog entries and forum answers.
5. Your own profile page.
6. Eventually, I'd create pages built around the tips - ie.. a "Top 10 things to see in London" page. But there will need to be a decent amount of tips in the system before generating those.

Sounds good and relevant. Question: If you're going to have a top 10 (or similar, are you going to let people vote or give stars or something. VT had that feature where you could vote in two categories: Accuracy and helpfullness. They got rid of one of them and got more carefull about it because people would up or downvote because of friendship and not actual content. Be carefull if you're planning to do this.

2. I've uploaded a tip and found out that I canot edit a tip I posted. Is it possible to implement editing existing tips. That would make it easyer to write better tips.

Yes, that will come.

Some general comments
Tips could also be showed on the feedpage of people you follow.
VT had several tip categories, having forms to fill out different from category to category. I'm a little on the fence on wherther that was good or not. I quite like being a little more freeform. However; you could make suggestions on what to include (This list is only from the top of my head):

  • Practical things like contact information etc,
  • Information on when you were there (spring, winter or date),
  • History of the place
  • surprising things,
  • dress code,
  • is it allowed to take photos etc...

Generally, contact information should be attached to the point of interest itself. You'll notice if you select one of the points of interest from the suggested ones, it will likely have some information attached to it - ie.. a Wikipedia link. I'm not including phone numbers in there for now, but it definitely could be added.

I remembered that i pointed to a map after I pressed submit, but it was just taken from the top of my head, at the spur of the moment, just typing whatever came to mind, just like now...

Glad I could help.

Just a heads up - I uploaded a change today which will make your new home pages look quite blank. It's now populating your stream with blog entries as they are being posted. I'll backfill it with older entries a little later in the week, but for now they're pretty empty.

Also, if you add a tip, that will now also show in your follower's feeds.

And featured blog entries will show in everyone's feed.

More content to come :)

I've populated the streams with the 20 last featured blog posts. So everyone should see something at least on the page.

And sorry about that last 90 minutes of downtime or so if anyone was inconvenienced by it! Rather self-inflicted I'm afraid - I ran a bad query which consumed all the database storage and totally killed the server. Resizing it took about an hour, and all I could do was wait while that was happening :(

Thanks for the information about the downtime - I was wondering!

It's good to see the featured blogs on the home page (especially as mine is one of them lol ) but presumably going forwards we'll also have the content from friends? How do you plan to balance the two / arrange them on the page?

In the first instance it will be pretty much time based. So most recent at the top with featured ones showing based on when they were featured.

Featured entries can come in clusters as a result of that. Content from friends will pop up as soon as one of the people you're following posts something. This includes tips now as well. I didn't go and populate that with older posts yet. I might do that in the next couple of days - the result of that would be a bunch of old stuff right at the top of the feed all of a sudden though which is not really how it would behave once things are settled.

Put up another update today. Featured photos will start showing in the stream as well. Also some changes to the look of the stream items - nothing drastic but I think they are looking a bit neater.

It's looking good - I like having the photos included too, and I also got a tip from you showing up.

This might have to be something for further down the line, but when I looked at your tip (on Yoyogi Park) and scrolled through the photos, I saw one I liked and wanted to comment on. But it's not possible to click through from the photo in the tip to where it shows up in your gallery, just as it isn't possible to do so with photos included in blogs. If I wanted to make my comment I would have to go to your profile, then to your photos, and then search through all your photos of Japan ... I'm probably not going to be so keen to comment that I'll do that, which is a shame. Any way to make photos from anywhere in the site either clickable through to the member's gallery or (better) with the possibility to star and/or comment directly? Likewise with tips - any plans to make it possible to comment on those?

Sorry, there's always something else

Yes there needs to be an option to comment on tips and photos (and star them) directly from the home page. Definitely high on my list of things to add. May or may not be before launch. The tips photos set up is also used in the mapping part of the site so it would immediately be available there also which I think would boost photo commenting a lot on the site.
