Dear all,

my girlfriend and I want to find a perfect place for a 10 - 18 days (depends on how much holiday we get, but shouldn't affect the choice of destination) holiday this November.

We like to have beautiful beaches and the opportunity to snorkel. We both already saw sea turtles, but whale sharks, manta (or other) rays, morays, searhorses, sharks, whales or anything new besides fish would be great.

Now one destination could possibly be the Maldives, but we want to have some cities to go to at night/evening and not just sit in our bungalow/a resort alone. It could possibily be a secluded area, but with the possibility to go for dinner and drinks to a town nearby by scooter or taxi.

Then, we both had some holidays with roadtrips in the US or destination hopping in south east asia, so we don't want to check-in and out every 1-3 days with the need to repack all the time.

So depending on the length of our stay I would say 2-3 destination at most. Perfect would be one, if we can do all the trips, adventures etc. from just this one spot where we are staying. That's why I almost ruled out Lombok and Bali because we would need to relocate several times, even changing islands when going to the Gilis.

If staying at one place for more than 5 days, I could also consider doing my diving license there - or at lease gather first experiences in this. But we also want to relax at the beach on some days, do adventures/excursions/trips on the other days, to have the perfect mix.

Since we are living in Europe and I intend to visit as much far aways destinations as possible before there might be children involved (that's when I will choose closer destinations in Europe), we don't want to go to anywhere in Europe. Also, we want to visit a country we both have never been to before, which rules out the following:

- UAE (Dubai / Abu Dhabi)
- Egypt
- Mexico
- USA
- Sri Lanka
- Singapore
- Thailand
- Europe (see above)

And of course, it needs to be warm enough for serving as a summer replacement holiday (both air and sea water temperature).

What I stumbled upon was Ilha Grande, an Island just off the Brazilian coast, close to Rio. So this islands looks like a lot of fun for hiking, trips, snorkeling, boat trips, relaxing at the beach, also a 2-3 day stop in Rio and the Copacabana would spice this all up.

But of course, I am still struggling to find other destinations. It is kinda hard to find halfway enough information about Ilha Grande compared to destinations like Lombok.

Does anyone have any good ideas? We'd love to hear from your ideas and experiences and are looking forward to any help. The budget shouldn't be the problem for us.

Thank you very much in advance!

Cheers,
p4e

So you want somewhere hot with city and nightlife, and also with beach & snorkelling.
There are so many options available to you and the final decision will just be your personal choice.

Just in Asia (no particular order) ; India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia (West and East inc. Borneo), Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam.
My 1st suggestion would probably be Sarawak but maybe turtle beaches and Orangutan sanctuaries aren't your thing.

Hello Andrew,

thanks for your quick response.

We do not need to have a vibrant nightlife in terms of clubs nearby, but it would be nice to have the opportunity to go out for dinner an drinks.

We already thought about the Philippines, but we are no backpackers and don't like island hopping with our entire luggage too often within one journey. So we were kinda scared of the Philippines and don't know where to go there.

Vietnam was something I heard of a lot, but I am unsure about the marina life when it comes to snorkeling, or where there is a sufficient infrastructure to stay, have the opportunity to book day trips etc.

Does India have tropical, paradise-like beaches and good opportunites to snorkel with a lot of marina life?

Turtles and Orangutans in Sarawak definitely sound nice.

Best regards,
p4e

May be worth a look at Roatan island in Honduras.

Roatan looks amazing. Unfortunately, November seems to be a heavy rain season for Roatan :(

Indeed, Roatan is a good bet as this is one of the cheapest places to get your PADI cert. Nearby Utila Island has several private cayes you can rent for about $150 per night - not bad considering the comfort level of the cabins on these private cayes.

One is called Sandy Cay and the other is Little Cay. Worth the splurge!

For more PADI info in the area check out www.aboututila.com

Bahia Concepcion on the Baja Peninsula in Mexico is a great place to snorkel and swim with whale sharks. Development here is refreshingly light and not at all like Cabo San Lucas. The nice town of Mulege is just up the road from the bay and has shops, restaurants, bars, several small hotels and no resorts. This area (the beaches) gets busy with the Canadian and US RV (caravan) crowd from late October to Easter.

What about Hawaii? Any of the Islands do have what you want.

Philippines has Backpacker places and Resort places. Somewhere like Boracay would probably be worth investigating.

Vietnam is pretty similar to Thailand infrastructure-wise (not the same but really not far off).
NhaTrang may be a bit too 'party town' for you, but There are plenty of options all along the coast.

Yes India has some awesome beaches. Personally I'd go for Kerala State (Maybe Kovalam, but probably a bit further north), but November can still be a bit rainy which would leave the water murky (the same can be said of many places in Nov in Asia...). Although you could be lucky.
You'll need to do some investigation on the best snorkelling places.

November is the beginning of the dry season. The green season is the summer.

My husband did his PADI open water diving certification in Cozumel. That is a very nice diving location and you can do snorkeling there too. It does have the disadvantage of cruise ship visits, but there are lots of places to eat and be out and around after the ships leave. The reef there extends all the way down to Belize and it is the biggest reef in the Atlantic. The northern islands of Belize (Ambergris Cay) are also great for diving although I found the reef there to be more monochromatic.

I did my OW dives from a sailboat in the Virgin Islands. We chartered a sailboat with a crew (they ran the boat and cooked), and one of the crew was a PADI instructor and she did my certification dives. The advantage to this is that you move the boat around to different diving and snorkeling sites, but you don't have to pack and unpack as your bed goes with you. And you can dinghy in for dinner on shore or go to one of the islands and walk around if you want to. The crew will take the boat where you want to go.
