Hello,
I’ll be taking a trip to Arizona late September and really want to try sand boarding down dunes. I’ve heard of Yuma but does anyone know some other spots where I could do this in Arizona or close to it?

Thanks

Close to Arizona? How long do you have and how far are you willing to travel? Utah and Colorado feature some places to sandboard and those states (Colorado only slightly so) border Arizona - they are both a bit far from Yuma, though. The dunes you're likely thinking of near Yuma, Arizona are actually in California, just across the border.

Are you limited to just Arizona or the far southeastern part of California? If not, your possibilities for sandboarding will broaden greatly. Just need to know how far you are willing to travel and how much time you have.

You mention the west coast as well in the title of this thread?

I’ll be traveling about 10 days total split between LA, SF, and Phoenix. I’d be willing to drive maybe 2 hours or so from each of these places. Or if something was on the way between any of these two as I’ll be driving.

Colorado and Utah would be a stretch, then. There are various state parks and some federal lands (parks, monuments and a BLM area) for sandboarding in those states if you could make it. The dunes in California (Interstate 8 east toward Yuma) sound like the best bet for you.

Keep mind these dunes can be wicked busy that time of year as many of the BAJA 1000 teams and enthusiasts meet here to test their vehicles leading up to the big race (in Mexico) mid-November.

Sounds like fun - good luck!
