I had similar concerns going to Bangkok several years ago when there was political unrest. It hit the news after I had booked my trip. I was not traveling for another three months so I waited to see if anything would change but the situation got worse. I kept doing my research and found a very helpful British ex pat who lived in Thailand and with his advice and help I was able to change hotels to a safer area and avoid any of the protest and riot areas. There were very few tourists when we arrived so we really received extra service and appreciation from every one we dealt with while there. So I would advice you just to monitor the situation for now. You still have a lot of time before you leave for your trip.

Big shame to hear of the troubles, I won't like to be caught up in any of that or stuck with my family in the Airport. Hong Kong is a great place to visit, I stopped there twice, once whilst it was still a UK territory then again a few years later. Only really had time to see a few of the sights as both trips were stop overs.
