Hi. Single female middle aged experienced traveler here. I will be visiting Shanghai and the area for about 6 days in October 2019. Looking for ideas on must sees/must dos/must eats. I plan to visit at least two nearby water villages, and possibly go to Suzhou as well. Also interesting in joining one or more 1/2 day or day tours around Shanghai but online forums appear to be expensive for a private tour and group tours seem to be for those traveling in groups. Suggestions?

I just got back from Shanghai a couple of weeks ago. I think if it is your first visit you should focus on the popular central areas on either side of the Huangpu River. That would be Nanjing Road, the Bund, Yuyuan Gardens and the surrounding neighborhoods, and Pudong. The water villages are nice but are kind of like tourist theme parks. For a more local experience you might try the Uighur market every Friday near the Huxi Mosque. I would also check out the Tian Zi Fang area for boutiques and art in a beautiful classical setting and Xin Tian Di for restaurants and night life.

The most expensive part of traveling in Shanghai is transportation and accommodation.
I personally suggest that in terms of accommodation, you can try to live in youth travel, the price is very cheap, but also a lot of travel companions, in terms of transportation, you can try mass transit, do not suggest you take a taxi, you can take the bus, bus.
Package tours can seem expensive, and you can probably save a lot of money by trying to find travel companions at youth hostels and traveling with them.

Dearnessie - this thread is 38 weeks old and the original poster was looking for advice about travelling in October 2019; that's over six months ago. And could you possibly change your profile picture from the K-pop one; you're probably breaching a copyright.

I'm new to this forum, and actually living in Shanghai.
I'll have to say that I'm quite amazed by moderator reaction... really not welcoming nor friendly.
Other people could have benefited from other posters' advises, even though the original poster probably doesn't need anymore...

(and by the way, for anyone curious to visit Shanghai, Xintiandi or Tianzifang are probably NOT the place you want to visit first...)

It probably makes more sense if seen in wider context. That new user had already been asked once to remove a fake profile picture and hadn't complied. We suffer from a lot of spammers and fakers so when we see something suspicious we try to tackle it; at first we tend to ask nicely but we escalate quickly. That's when it may be a genuine new user, if it's more obviously a spammer then we just stamp on it.

Our zero tolerance policy does get a lot of support from site users who keep saying it makes a more reliable site where they have trust in the advice they're given. :)
