Hi Everyone.
I was wondering if anyone could help me with some advice. My friend and I are travelling from Gananoque to Niagara on the Lake and we desperately want to avoid passing through Toronto again ( done it 5 times already and hate hate hate the traffic and congestion.) We were thinking of crossing over into NY and driving instead through Watertown and Rochester. Can anyone tell us what that drive is like? Is it less congested and more scenic? We’d do just about anything to avoid Toronto again.

When are you going?

Heading into NY state from your departure point will not tack on too many additional miles. Is it more scenic? Yes - in the sense you'll be avoiding much of the sprawl of Toronto.

The most direct route, once you pass south of Rochester, will head into Buffalo and the sprawl there. Prior to approaching Buffalo, why not head north just past Rochester and take some state/county roads to Niagara-on-the-lake? Doing this you'll be passing through bucolic scenery and little towns while avoiding Buffalo.

These back roads beyond Rochester won't be the most direct route but if you have the time and are after some scenery and respite from traffic, sure why not?
