Long story short, I would like some people to point out the flaws in my plan.
I am a Canadian (28f) looking to spend the month of January in Costa Rica. I found an apartment in the town I took a holiday in a few years ago, and I really want to take the plunge. I have a friend in CR that went to the apartment and checked it out - he says everything seems legitimate. This morning the landlord sent me a rental agreement. She wants a 50% deposit ($250usd) to save the space , and the other $250 is to be paid when I arrive. This seems fine to me. I was going to transfer the deposit via tranferwise.
While I am there I plan to keep my online ESL teaching job. The landlord says the internet at the apartment is great, and very rarely goes out.
Everything seems good to me, but I am always worried I am being naive. What things should I be checking into before I send a deposit? TIA!!!

Hi!

This is very usual in CR. Mostly people are honest with this type of thing. However, if you are coming in January and especially if you are going to a beach town, you have to move fast to make a decision. I live in a beach town and January there is NOTHING available to rent and many people book months in advance

Do you know if the landlord is on something like Airbnb? You could check their listing and rating

Where are you going to be? Try to find another person or restaurant/bar where they may know the person and you can ask. Ask the landlord if he will give you the name of someone who RECENTLY stayed with him that you can call

Other than that, I would suggest you pay via a way that you can reverse the payment if there is any problem..I hope all goes well for you and you have a great time here!

Thank you for your response!
The apartment is not on Airbnb or anything. The owner is Costa Rican and does her rentals privately. I think that is part of the reason it is still available for January. She lives upstairs, and it seems like she choose tenants based on their requests and posts and is a little picky about who she rents to (understandably, considering she lives on premises).
The apartment is in Samara. My friend in CR does not know the owner personally, but he did go to the apartment and check it out. He sent me pictures that match the pictures the owner sent me.
Asking for contact info for a recent renter is a great idea. I will definitely consider that.
What payment options that have an option for reversal would you recommend? Thank you again for your time!!

Well well well.... thats where I live!

I normally do sales with my work at Samara property company, but occasionally do rentals. Maybe I know the person... Let me know... I may be able to tell you

With regard to how to pay, Paypal, or something that you can open a dispute if things dont work out

maybe I will meet you in January!

Oh my word. I am 99% sure I just messaged you on Facebook....
(Let me know if I am mistaken — and we can connect otherwise :) )
I would really like that! I am coming alone, and am hoping to meet lots of new people :)

Sounds like you have the help you were looking for - I just wanted to point out that if Facebook doesn't help you two to link up, we have a messaging system here you can use, so no need to go anywhere else :)

I would search for reviews from previous renters of that apartment to see if it's worth staying there.
