$5000 to show when arriving at Perth airport

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific $5000 to show when arriving at Perth airport

My girlfriend is currently living in K.L in Malaysia and wishes to travel to Perth, Australia to visit me on a working visa and hoping she can stay and live here, but she was told by the Travel agent that because it is her first time traveling to Perth, Australia and travelling with a working visa, she is required to carry $5000 on her to show customers when she arrives at Perth airport.

Please is this so? I hope someone can respond and help me with this.
Thanks.

She almost certainly isn't required to carry AUD $5000 in cash on her.
She probably is required to have access to at least AUD $5000 in available funds, with some proof of this (bank statements or such).

Your girlfriend's nationality (presumably Malaysian, but it's helpful if you specify this), and the exact visa she'll be travelling on (the name and number; like "Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489)" or whatever), would be rather helpful information in order to look up the specific requirements that she'll be subject to.

Addolorato,

You made a very similar query in a thread about 6 months ago and were given some sound advice and information. Have you checked back over that last thread?

Best of luck to you :)

Hi thanks for your response. I think a lot of travellers are confused over this and I really could not get a positive or a confident response.

Thanks for your response Sanders but your response do not make sense.

here is a list of "work visas". Find out from your girlfriend which specific one she has. Click through to the visa for information about its requirements. Most work visas don't list anything at all about available funds (which makes sense, since you'll be working, and thus presumably earning the money to support yourself). Something like the WHV lists on its eligibility page:

Have enough money
You must have enough money to:

  • support yourself while you are in Australia
  • leave Australia at the end of your stay

This is usually about AUD5,000 for your initial stay, plus the fare to where you are going after leaving Australia.

The "step by step" page has under "gather your documents":

Enough money for your stay and to leave
Provide evidence you have enough money for your stay in Australia. This is usually AUD5,000.
You must also show us you have enough money to buy a ticket to leave Australia at the end of your stay, or that you already have the ticket.
If you don’t attach evidence to your application, processing may be delayed if we need to contact you to request further information.

So, proof of funds with that visa must be provided when you apply, not when you arrive in Australia, and definitely isn't cash.

None of the work visas I've looked at even list an "enough money" requirement, let alone anything about bringing it to the airport. As such, I think the conclusion from six months ago (thanks road to roam!) that you're being scammed is still true, but you'd have to look at each and every single visa page (or get the exact name and number of your "girlfriend's" visa) to be able to state this with more certainty.

i don't want to cheapen your relationship bud, but you are aware of the "dating $cams" - yes!

That's sounds like an old one to me, is this person asking for a money transfer for the $5g's ? I only ask and are mentioning this to you as I watched a mate get cought up with this one and pay dearly on any levels! Yeah sure, they had met on the two or three times he went over there, aaand they did the video chat every night -but he still got sucker punched! And hard!

Nearly $10g's all up, "we say more like $15+g's, we know he was sending over $100Au weekly for a year or so also" + visa, passports, blah blah need cash to show customs - honey ! blah blah blah and money in the account- my love.. guess who didn't show up in Australia! One $10'000+ richer Asian scammer...
It's a low earn in the criminal world as we all know, but they do it! They love the old saying, a fool and thier money are soon parted and, they see love as a fools game ! Beware!

It's a year old thread so the OP likely isn't around the site to see your reply now.
