Hey to everyone!

Sorry in advance if topics like these are not allowed, if that's case please delete it :).

I'm going to the city of Malmo ,Sweden for my master studies for 2 years with my girlfriend. I've heard rumors about the criminality and the dangers of the area but I'd like to hear opinions from people that visited or live there :)

It's hard to know what you're measuring against as normal, as you haven't given any details in your profile. But you have written in American English, in which case levels of personal crime in Sweden are much lower.

I've not been to Malmo for some years, but back then it felt perfectly safe.

It is a border town though, so perhaps there's something going on there that I'm missing?

I visited Malmo (solo, middled-aged female) about 5 years ago. I found it a comfortable and cosmopolitan city which I enjoyed exploring on foot.

It felt perfectly safe to me too, certainly no less safe than any similar-sized settlement in any other EU country and very much safer than many places I've visted in the US.

I visited Malmo a few years ago and it felt perfectly safe to me then.

Malmo is no more dangerous than any other city in Europe. The media reports are over blowing the situation in Sweden. Despite what all the go back to the good old days people like to tell you there has always been some element of criminality in Sweden and the reality is all gangs around the world operate in the lower socio economic sectors of a country. You will be there for two years you will learn the nuances of Sweden;). Be aware but don't be paranoid

There is not the slightest danger to you in Malmö, outside of the risk of a sad glance if you pronounce the city's name as Malmoh instead of Malmuh.

No place is completely safe. Sometimes there are unavoidable accidents.

I have neither lived in nor visited Malmo. I have lived in Baltimore which has a high crime rate, and I frequently visit Miami (ditto) and I have been to a number of places which have bad press about criminals. Most of it is exaggerated, or they have taken people who behaved foolishly (got drunk, went to buy drugs, etc.) and they got into the same kind of trouble that people that behave foolishly get into anywhere.
