Hey everyone,

I'm in the process of redoing the accommodation area of the site. I've neglected it for far too long and right now it's just far too slow, overly complicated and not really in keeping with what the rest of the site is doing. Also, the accommodation booking commissions are a pretty important way for the site to pay its bills and I really need to boost them a bit so it's time to stop neglecting it.

What I'm doing is restructuring it so that each city / place page is more of a short guide on areas where one might want to stay in that city. For example, the Amsterdam page mentions four popular areas to stay: The Old Centre, Jordaan, The Canal Ring and On the Water. Each with a bit of content about what to expect from the area.

Thing is, there are sooooo many places to write about that I'm a bit stumped. I can't automate this kind of content.

So here I am asking for some help if you can provide it. I would like to get at least 100 of the largest destinations covered reasonably quickly. I have done 13 so far. Here they are for reference:

Also Taken

  • Auckland
  • Baltimore
  • Prague
  • Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Key West
  • New Orleans
  • Miami
  • Charleston SC
  • Madrid
  • Shanghai
  • Osaka
  • Los Angeles
  • Bermuda
  • Barbados
  • Copenhagen

Basically anywhere else is desirable. Typical content length is at least 500 words. No real problem if it's longer.

Anyway, if you can help, I would be very grateful. Totally happy to link back to your profile from the page as well. Having the accommodation pages tie back to the community would be nice I think.

If you are interested, maybe just let us know which city / place you can do before starting so we don't double up :)

[ Edit: More places taken. ]

[removed no longer relevant bug analysing, to keep the thread a bit easier to read]

Might be helpful to link up those example pages, too.

Yeah, I messed something up last night when playing around with this. I was up until 3am trying to fix it. What you're looking at is the old version of the accommodation area though.

I'll probably get the new version up before trying to fix the old one. It should be a lot more robust.

Peter, I'll be happy to do Paris if you give me an idea of what you want. I tried the Accommodations link and could choose a budget but only in Hong Kong and there was no information at all, just a list of hotel names. The feature was there and fine. I thought they were your accommodations service. Didn't realize there was another option.

I'll try your link again tomorrow when I'm on my computer. I could do a few cities in France if you need them. Just let me know.

Phew, well I have the new version up and running now. At least in a temporary way. There's still a fair bit of work to do on it, but I couldn't take the broken state of the old one much longer. At least this loads and loads fast.

So the Melbourne page is my most complete example. Naturally the easiest one for me to do on my own.

You will see on the front accommodation page that there are some prominent places mentioned at the top. Those are the ones where I already have the kind of content I'd need. Some smaller destinations can probably do with less content. Some large ones can probably do with more.

Sally, thanks a million for your offer! I do have some content there for Paris already. See what you think of the existing content. It was written with budget accommodation in mind but that could be expanded or even just rewritten. I trust your take on this. Any other cities in France would be most welcome!

I'd be happy to do London as long as it can wait till next week as I'm away for the weekend

I would love to help, but I don't know enough. When I was staying in budget accommodations it was a really long time ago and I no longer do that. Also I try to stay out of big cities. I might be able to do something on Baltimore or anywhere in Maryland where I grew up and worked. Or maybe D.C. or Miami or NOLA.

Thanks Sarah and Rosalie. I do have some content for London as well at the moment, though considering the size of the city it could do with some expanding. I feel like there are more areas worth mentioning probably.

Baltimore, Miami, DC, NOLA or any smaller cities / towns would also all be great. It also doesn't have to be about budget accommodation. That's mostly a hangover from the previous focus of the accommodation area. It's more important to just describe the different areas that are good to stay in.

If you send me what you have already on London, Peter, I can suggest additions or changes.

It's the content on this London accommodation page :)
