...We never put anything in our checked bags that we would mind losing . . . :(

That's probably the key. Or even better - don't take anything with you that you would be upset if it didn't turn up at the other end. Except for film stars going to the Oscars or something, I see no reason to wear any kind of valuable jewelry when traveling.

Although coming back from Tanzania, I put all the cameras in my checked bag - they were just too heavy to put in the carryon, especially since I had to put the scooter battery in there too.

I've had mine lost several times. Most times it turns up the next day or so. Once I was flying Air Italia and it was lost. I spent a day in Milan and then had a train to Vienna for three days. The luggage never turned up and then Air Italia went on strike. I left Vienna for Prague for five days. The luggage never did turn up. Finally a few weeks after I returned home it showed up at my door step. I had to buy underwear in Vienna and spoke no German. That makes for a fun travel story. I bought a few things in Prague and filed an insurance claim for them.

Didn't go missing, but along the line of a delayed baggage.. My sis traveled Cathay Pacific and had her luggage badly damaged. They called up and explained. Unfortunately, no one picked up the follow up call for the luggage replacement and they took it into their own hands and got my sis a repeating pattern of astro boy. They said it was the closest match to my sis Eiffel tower suitcase. No one except my sis is complaining

Being a frequent traveler, I have traveled around 155 countries in the world. To be honest, losing my luggage is quite common for me and I think the last time I lost my luggage was in Karachi, Pakistan when I landed there and it took me nearly 2 weeks to get my luggage back to my hotel. So it's quite common for me!

Ray Hammond, since you are a globetrotter with some 155 countries under your belt, have you ever considered traveling with only a carry on and perhaps a personal item such as a laptop bag? That way losing your baggage won't be as common an occurence.

I keep my laptop and important stuff in my handbag that I carry along!

My luggage never arrived in Los Angeles, the airline only gave me $75 to buy 1st necessity stuff.
The insurance took 3 months to pay me half of the value of what was in my luggage.

I guess that's a "no" then.

Also, packing efficiently will help reduce the size and amount of baggage needed.
