Hey there,

my friends and I are going to New Orleans on Mardi Gras and we were wondering if that's not too complicated to attend the parades ?
I've seen that we can buy tickets to be in a seating zone but it's a little bit expensive and I think the atmosphere is different when we stand on the streets. Is the atmosphere really different on the street and in the seating zone ? And if we stay on the streets in the French Quarter will we be able to see the Parade or is the crowd too big ?
What do you think is the best way to enjoy this day ?

Thank you all for your help :)

We were there back in 2012, and it is fun. We went along on a few days. For the Fat Tuesday itself, we had booked seats in the stands, because we figured it would be extra busy that day, and I have trouble with my back. The stands are fine, but personally, I didn't think the experience was as good as out on the street. If catching beads and stuff is important to you, you'll generally get more if you're at the front on the street.

For earlier parades, we were just streetside on Charles Avenue, and the atmosphere was great. You do have to be there well in advance to get a spot at the front though. People set up with chairs etc very early on. The crowds are huge, easily five people deep, and while the floats are big, so you'll get some view, you would miss out on some of the fun if you are at the back.
