How bad is the censorship situation in China? Should I be worried?

Should I carry subscribe to a VPN? I've read on a lot of forums that a VPN is must in China. Also, is it safe?

[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please. ]

Do not criticise China or mention Hong Kong before going there or while there, even with a VPN.

I maintain that if you obey the laws in China, then you will have a good holiday there.

If you live in the U.S. and are a subscriber to Google Fi you will be able to access Facebook in China. I did so while traveling there, all the way from Beijing to western Tibet in 2018. I uploaded photos to Facebook immediately after I took them with my Pixel 2 mobile phone. There was no need to use a VPN.

See this link: https://www.androidauthority.com/using-google-fi-in-china-850456/

I have successfully used Google Fi throughout the world with the exception of places where the telecommunications provider is government owned, such as regions in india where BSNL is the sole carrier. Rates are reasonable. I spend at least six months overseas; and Google Fi has been indispensable to me.
