Hi,

I’m due to travel to Australia in mid march. I am obviously very aware of the bushfires and the extent of the damage. I had planned to campervan from Melbourne to Cairns. Do you think this will still be possible or should I be looking at alternating my route?

I know it’s a few months off but I’ve read that they are expected to continue for a while.

thanks!

By March the fires should be much lower if not over, however the damage is going to take a long time to recover. It doesn't necessarily mean you should avoid the fire damaged areas they could really do with some tourism dollar but there will probably be less facilities.
Here are some maps of the fire effected regions. You can use these resources to plan accordingly:

Here are the resources for NSW:

For Victoria:

And while it hasn't been as bad QLD:

If you are driving from Melbourne to Cairns you will pass through some large areas that have been impacted by the fires, but you will also still experience some of the stunning coastline and lots of places that have not been directly impacted.

With the amount of bush that has already been burnt, you can expect that all major roads will be operational in March (and hopefully most/all other roads as well). Most of the impact that you will witness is between Melbourne and Sydney assuming that you take the coast road.

You should still plan to visit - just check websites for updates to facilities in the weeks prior.
