Is it safe to access US Airport WiFi without worrying about the data being stolen or being watched by anyone?

If you are truly worried look into a portable VPN..

I have used free wifi at airports without any problems that I am aware of. (No problems that I AM AWARE OF - did someone get info from me - so far don't know!)

If you have data on your phone, I'd recommend creating a hotspot with that and connecting through that instead.

It's definitely safer than any public wifi hotspot.

Regarding the airport hotspot specifically.. it would be trivial to fool people into logging on to a fake airport hotspot. All you'd need to do is create a free hotspot named "AIRPORT FREE WIFI" or something similar. Then it could all run through your router and once that's the case, you can easily monitor all the unencrypted communication. Any transmissions that aren't over https are easy to read at that point.

Getting a VPN helps a lot to protect against this, as well as ensuring you are only entering your passwords on sites that use https.

Thanks a lot Peter, it was really helpful I used a VPN to connect to public wifi securely.
