I am going to travel to Taiwan soon. I want to rent a car there so I can visit the destination as I like. Can everyone share your experience of renting a car there for me?

I will stay in Taipei for 5 days, then move to Taichung and Tainan, each staying for about 3 days.

Renting a car in Taiwan is no different to renting anywhere else though only few companies have their cars at the airport but most will pick you up and take you to their offices. You will need to have an International Driving Permit and it has to be the 1949 Convention one. If you have a car make sure to get into the mountains as there are spectacular views and go up the East Coast is also very scenic. You may want to ask for a toll pass if you want to speed up driving through cities.

I am always afraid to rent a car in another country. After all, sometimes the rules of the road are slightly different ...

You can always contact their Automobile Association. Another possibility is to Google the country name and driving regulations. Check your local bookstore for guides about the country you are visiting. Most guide books have driving rules in them.

We nearly always rent a car unless we are staying mainly in cities when we can easily use public transportation in them and between them.

Much already has been said about renting a vehicle in Taiwan. There also is a lot of information online. Specific recommendations are likely to be flagged as promotional and removed as spam.

Car rental in Taiwan isn't easy. Most car rental companies operate at 2000-2500NT per day, approximately $65-$80USD, for a small car.
You will receive discounts with local car rental agencies if you drive for more than 3-4 days. Usually, you can take 500NT off the listed regular rate if you ask.
