hoping to Volunteer abroad

Travel Forums General Talk hoping to Volunteer abroad

I'm seriously interested in volunteering abroad later on this year, and hoping to be working with animals in some capacity. I'm open minded to the type of animals as long as it is concerning their welfare and protection.

I've considered Oz after all the recent bad bush fires ....... but am open minded regarding the country.

Has anyone got any helpful tips on do's and don'ts when looking at different organisations etc........ there seems to be an overwhelming amount of organisations that offer this, but I want to make sure I'm going to one that has the best interests of the area and animals at heart.

I thought you were planning to buy a motorhome sometime this year then spend time travelling around Europe? Have your plans changed?

Volunteers are very often only useful and/or wanted if they have specific skills and/or experience. Unskilled and/or inexperienced volunteers can be more of a hindrance than a help, especially in emergency situations.

In the majority of cases a fee is required. Charitable organisations and NGOs, rightly, cannot and imo should not be expected to pay for flights, board & lodging for those who want to volunteer their services. Their funds should to be spent on supporting whatever work they're doing. So you need to work out what sort of budget you've got for any volunteering activity abroad.

Read this first:

https://www.goabroad.com/articles/volunteer-abroad/how-to-volunteer-abroad-for-free

Then look at sites which list volunteer opportunities abroad e.g.

https://www.projects-abroad.co.uk/

https://www.gvi.co.uk/volunteer-abroad/

https://frontier.ac.uk/Volunteer/Volunteer-Abroad.aspx

and several others (volunteering is popular).

Earthwatch has a few openings for volunteer positions dealing with animals. Not free, you pay for your flights and daily upkeep.

https://earthwatch.org/Expeditions

(In my country (US) the cost of this expedition and cost of plane ticket count as a charitable donation for tax purposes.)

Your choice.

“I thought you were planning to buy a motorhome sometime this year then spend time travelling around Europe? Have you changed your mind?” .

I’m going to be having a gap year or so, looking to do 6 months ish of one kind of travel and the second 6 months of another. ????

Thanks for the links. I’m aware I need to find flights accommodation etc ...... that’s not an issue. I just wondered if people knew of any potential issue around volunteering that they’d not anticipated. Forewarned and all that !!

Each country you visit will have their own particular rules and regulations. I you are looking for a place where you can "volunteer" for free there may be other strings attached. One regulation may be a requirement for a work permit.

  • * Lots of tourists think it is neat to work with cute kids or cuddly animals. You know, take a selfie photo for show and tell back home. Not too many want to volunteer at an "end of life" hospice cleaning turds off the floor or working with severely handicapped kids who can't even change their clothes or feed themselves.

Great Initiative, looking forward to sharing the details please be aware of how the cybercriminals are profiting when you send dollars to donate to Australian bushfire.

I am happy to do what is needed........ and don't mind getting my hands more than dirty, so to speak. I'm certainly not an Instagram selfie queen !!

I've googled it like you do...... but I'm conscious that of course I don't want to be ripped off. Plus I want to work with an organisation that makes a real difference to their cause and aren't simply trying to line their pockets !!

TIA
