I’m new here so hello to everyone. I’m doing a road trip from Calais to Chamonix in May and have never driven abroad and wondered if anyone more experienced could offer some advice? I’m splitting journey in two and spending a night in Magnant close to A5.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Rob

Where do you usually drive (UK?)? Will you be hiring a car in Calais or bringing your own from the UK?

If it's your own UK car you obviously need to sort out the extra insurance and make sure you carry the legally-required items for driving in France. The RAC has a useful info page:

https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/travel/country/france/

You might also think about getting European breakdown cover from the AA or RAC.

You can obviously ignore any info about post-Brexit travel (green card etc) because the UK is in a transition period until 1st Jan 2021 and nothing has yet changed.

If you'll be driving a right-hand drive car you will need to be extra-careful, especially at junctions/roundabouts and particularly so when starting off after a break.

Thanks for the information. I have all necessary paperwork as well as the items you have to carry. Yes I’m driving my own car but have purchased a sanef tag to make life easier ????

Be sure to be careful of the Speeding Radars, there are a lot of them. And they are hefty fines- WAZE does a pretty good job of notifying you about them. Make sure not to leave valuables in the car when you make rest stops.

Hi camille74, thanks for the advice, I had read that leaving valuables on show is asking for trouble!

Kind regards
Robert

Exactly as it is in the UK. Ditto speed traps! :-)

I simply meant that leaving valuables on show in your car is as foolish in the UK (and asking for trouble) as it is in France or anywhere else....and that the UK has just as many, if not more, 'speed traps' (2800+ and counting...). The UK certainly has more CCTV cameras than any other country.

More than China? The United States?

Yes, when you take country size & population into account. The UK has more than 5 million CCTV cameras (roughly one to every 11 people) and is, of course, massively smaller than China or the US, with a much smaller population. I believe London still comes second only to Beijing in terms of 'most CCTV cities'.
