Anyone affected by the Travel Ban from Europe imposed by President Trump?

It seems "Europe" means Schengen.

If I understand our media right it means the whole of Europe except Great Britain. No mentioning of Schengen in the report.

Quoting Kathrin_E

If I understand our media right it means the whole of Europe except Great Britain. No mentioning of Schengen in the report.

BBC news are saying "A presidential proclamation, published shortly after Mr Trump's speech, specified that the ban applied to anyone who had been in the EU's Schengen border-free area in the 14 days before their arrival in the US. The Schengen area, as defined in the proclamation, includes 26 European states, but does not include the UK or Ireland, which will not be subject to the ban."

The US' stance is imo completely illogical.

There are 50+ countries in Europe. The Schengen area is made up of just 26 European countries. Not all EU countries are in Schengen and not all Schengen countries are in the EU.

European countries outside the Schengen area include Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania (all EU), Serbia, Bosnia, Albania, Russia and many more. All have an increasing number of Covid-19 cases, just like the UK and the Republic of Ireland (which has just closed all its schools).

Personally, I very much hope the US quickly takes a more logical stance so I can get a full refund for my upcoming UK > Rep Ireland> US flight!

I wonder how long it will last?

> I wonder how long it will last?

Imo, there's absolutely no point in speculating about 'how long'. Unless fact-based, speculation serves no purpose other than to disseminate misinformation and increase panic.

Even if (as expected) cases decrease during the warmer, drier summer months the chances are that Covid-19, like all similar viruses, will re-emerge next winter. So the important long-term health aspects to focus upon are a) the production of a vaccine and b) developing anti-viral treatment to help the most seriously affected.

>This whole thing is over blown.

I really don't think the World Health Organisation goes in for 'over-blowing' events. :-/

https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019

As for 'far more die from the flu':

1. 'The flu' as such does not exist. Annual influenza outbreaks are caused by slightly different viruses, hence the need for an annual vaccine. Vaccines are annually 'tweaked' in order to be effective against the viruses likely to be encountered that year.

2. There is no vaccine which is effective against Covid-19 and therefore fatality rates will inevitably be higher than for 'the flu' simply because those in vulnerable groups will not be vaccinated.

3. Why Covid-19 isn't just 'the flu':

>According to the WHO, current evidence on the new coronavirus suggests 15% of all illnesses are severe infections, requiring oxygen, and 5% are critical infections requiring ventilation. These levels are “higher than what is observed for influenza infection”.

>Based on current data, the crude mortality rate (the number of reported deaths divided by the reported cases) is between 3-4%—although the actual rate, when including mild cases where people do not get diagnosed, is likely to be lower. Globally, for seasonal influenza, the WHO estimates the mortality rate is usually below 0.1%.

PS The panic-buying of toilet paper...or anything else....is not only totally unnecessary and completely selfish but also a direct result of the vast amount of baseless speculation and misinformation spread by social and other media.

fox news has published an explanation (if one trust fox news ) stating that the ban applies to foreign nationals who have been in the passport free shengen area within 14 days of travel to the u.s. and is quite similar to a ban imposed by the czech republic for at least seven or eight european countries (including the uk).
a similar ban is already in effect for those coming from china and south korea.
