We had flights to Qatar and Johannesburg booked for Easter, but now Qatar has closed its borders and so has South Africa. Plus my school just told me they expect me to keep doing online lessons during the Easter break, as our schools have been closed since February 2nd. We now provide work online and teach about an hour a day using Zoom. Add to that that I'd have to go into quarantine for 2 weeks when I returned to Hong Kong unless I was returning from Hina, Taiwan or Macau and I am definitely on a staycation.

We have flights booked to Darwin in June. I'm guessing that will not be going ahead. Hopefully we can get the money back.

I don't think I'd even be comfortable staying anywhere other than home right now. Maybe re-decorate the living room every so often to change things up. There is that old (terrible) saying that "a change is as good as a holiday" I moved a desk into the living room today. Much nicer view than in the study.

Can I also just add - I'm really glad that Travellerspoint gets a large portion of its revenue from its Supporters. Without that underpinning the site, I'd really struggle to cover the costs of running things right now. Total supporter count is around 240 at the moment. So thank you to all the Supporters out there who keep this site alive!

Thank you Peter for allowing a website for us crazy travelers to ask a crazy question about whether we are ironically taking a staycation or not instead of a normal vacation because the rest of the world is a mess and home is the better place to be right now.

I don't have anything booked until September, a Virtual Tourist meeting in Chicago, and I'm waiting to see what will happen nearer the time. I think there's a less than 50% chance of it being able to go ahead, but who knows? We were starting to consider booking something for October when all this started and we're relieved we didn't. My main decision has had to be to postpone the Virtual Tourist meeting I myself was to host at the end of May here in the UK, in Newcastle - impacting on other people's travel plans rather than my own. I have decided to put it back to next year, with members' agreement.

The impact of this pandemic will result in many airlines massively reducing their services or going bust entirely and huge numbers of hotels etc will go to the wall. After the crisis is over prices will rise massively people may well find their ability to travel is very substantially reduced.

Maybe - or maybe there will be bargains to be had as companies compete with each other to lure us back? I think it could go either way. At least the UK government has now announced that there will be financial relief to help businesses in the leisure industries so perhaps fewer will go under than would otherwise have been the case?

There may some bargains initially but imo they won't last long. Airlines, hotels and businesses will have to mitigate their very substantial losses as much as they can and...frankly....the economic situation is unlikely to be helpful.

I'm just being my usual pragmatic self. :-/

There are plenty of flight bargains to be had at the moment. Some for flights late in the year, or early 2021. I do work for a travel deal site part of my time and there is no shortage of really amazing deals. Just nobody wants to book them. All the deals being posted now are for late in the year or early next year. Airlines have also introduced very flexible change policies all of a sudden, to make booking a little less risky. I agree with leics2 - as soon as we come out the other end, the deals will evaporate and prices will shoot back up to make up for lost time.

I too agree with that. But there also be some travel agencies which for sure (unfortunately) will go under and after the situation normalizes there will be new ones to take their places which will cause competition which affects the prizes and the wheel will go round and round

AS for the OPs original question..not staycation as such as we were going to spend our summerholiday (which will be in May) at home doing some long over-do renovations. We were thinking that if we get the renovation done quickly enough we might make some trip to somewhere but as the situation is what it is, I think that we might just stay home and do the renovation more leisurely...

Well, the question was more aimed at the near future rather than the summer onward. This whole Carona Virus situation has really screwed up a lot of travel in the next month or so around the world. My own County that I live in....Blaine County, Idaho, USA.....has just legally issued an Isolation Order for the 25,000 residents of the county as of 5:30 pm, local time. Our "virus infected count" has just tripled overnight to 16 people. Our local city bus service will stop on Friday and I think our airport is closing to commercial flights with Emergency flights only to come and go for the next few weeks. Good luck everyone.

Ah, okay. I doubt that I'll have time off from work later this year so couldn't travel far even if the situation stabilizes. As for later, I have such a restless feet that when the opportunity comes I won't do the staycation :)

Our city in Central Ostrobothnia has v.i.c. 2 so far that I know of, more in more populated cities..our coverment discuss now about the curfew

Good luck to you too!
