Seeing as we're just about all stuck at home now, it's a great time to remember some of our excellent travels over the years.

What are your best travel memories?

Sharing an 18-hour cargo ship ride on the Sea of Cortes with, officially, Mexico's biggest Air Supply fan in July 2013...and he was on his way to an Air Supply concert in Mazatlan!

Hitchhiking with the police in El Salvador. Many good memories of the selfless folks who thought enough of us to stop and give us a lift - we remain in contact to this day with loads of people who picked us up over the years.

Rescuing a kidnapped dog from a cafe in Cortinth, Greece.

Tracking down a complete stranger in Honduras in 2013 who helped us once - in Honduras - back in 2011, just to thank her. This took some minor effort on our part, but finding her was worth it - and she remembered us!!

Hanging around in Bluefields, Nicaragua for 5 days waiting on a boat to take us to Big Corn Island, and all the other travelers we met there....in the same boat as us

Kayaking, fishing and diving for shellfish in Bahia Concepcion for several weeks in 2018, all while having our own private beach for camping out in the van for the entire time - PERFECT!

Brown-bagging a beer while sitting on the square during our first night in any town or city has become a tradition for us, so a lot of good memories keeping that practice alive!

....and many more, of course.

Seeing Hong Kong and China in March of 1984

Going to Yugoslavia in June 1985 and sailing between Split and Dubrovnik

Doing the 12 day Hurtigruten boat trip roundtrip from Bergen to Bergen, Norway in May and watching the sun set after midnight in addition to 2 weeks to do Genealogy work in Norway and finding relatives with another cousin from the 3rd side of my Norwegian family.

and SO many other trips........

Hmmm, susurprisingly hard question

3 month student-exchange in Budapest

• iceskating in the yard of Vajdahunyad Castle
• drinking beer in the Buda Hill
• visiting Erzebet Kilato (Elisabeths Lookout)

, just to mention few of my favorite memories from there ;)

Hopping knowingly on a bus which I didn't know where it was heading in a Sunny Beach, Bulgaria. Could have ended up somewhere boring but didn't :)

Climbing on a Temple in a hill in Thailand.

Rock Consert in Zurich!

What about you Peter? :)

Watching penguins 'porpoising' around the icebergs in Antarctica

Dawn at El Tatio geysers in the Atacama Desert

Coming face to face with the Moai of Easter Island

Arriving at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in a freak June blizzard and getting my first view of the canyon through the swirling snow

My first sight of Mount Fuji from a cable car in Hakone

Whale watching in Tofino, British Columbia - seeing grey whales from a zodiac much smaller than they were and almost close enough to touch

Meeting and becoming friends with many Virtual Tourist members from all over the world at our annual Euromeets

No doubt many more will be stimulated by others in this thread - great suggestion Peter!

....That reminded me of whale watching off of Province town, Mass, USA

Having a couple tall beers at that monastery in Salzburg, Austria and trying to walk back to the youth hostel on the old cobblestone roads at 11 pm at night......lol, so funny to laugh at myself.

Doing the Salt Mine tour in Salzburg, and while waiting to go in it, getting a spontaneous performance by a professional New York City Choir touring Europe that were also taking the Salt Mine Tour on their day off.

The same about me.
I took part in the VT Meet in Lviv in 2010 and in VT Meet in Kempten, Bavaria in 2017.
There is my travel blog about the last meeting in Bavaria.
Many thanks.

Yes, I had the Lviv meeting in mind, among others, when I posted that. I would probably have never visited that lovely city had you not proposed that meeting :)

My boat trip to Pitcairn in 2009 sure was a memorable one, not in the least because of one of two engines breaking down. Stayed a week on the main island in Adamstown, where all 50 people live. Visited some of the other islands like Oeno and Henderson. Hardly any visitors throughout the year.

In 2005 I visited North Korea. Zero freedom but what a totally weird experience that was.

My favorite country still is Namibia and also the northwestern corner of South Africa. Love the Kalahari and both its animale as well as people.

San Francisco has become my favorite city, also because of a good friend (met him during the Pitcairn trip, he joined us) living there. Been there 4 times and want to go back again. So much in and around the city to explore.

I love roadtrips and the USA and Australia are just the best countries for that. Love the wilde open spaces, big skies and national parks.

Wildlife encounters are on top of my list, especially tigers in India and a jaguar in the Pantanal, Brazil.

Tropical rainforests don’t get any better than the Mamiraua reserve in the hart of the Amazon. Excellent place and purely ecological.

Trainrides you say? Count me in. Best ones? Across the Turkish highlands (Anatolia) and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

In Europe, my favorite corner is the northwest. Iceland, Faroer Islands, Scotland...so beautiful.

Island fever? Check. Apart from Pitcairn and Iceland my favorites are Dominica, Saba, Madeira and Moorea: (sub)tropical and green, not too much focus on beaches. Love it.

And now....just Utrecht...;)
