I've just had a lovely message from a friend on Facebook - a former Virtual Tourist member who chose to set up his own blog when the site closed rather than migrate here as many of us did. I read and enjoy his blogs, and he often reads mine :)

He's been catching up on my blog entries about North Korea, and for a while was leaving me interesting and thoughtful comments, which I really appreciated getting. He's just finally got around to reading the last few and found he couldn't, as a non TP member, leave a comment on any of them. I understand the thinking behind setting limits on how long people can comment, but I have mine set to the maximum 90 days and have never had a single spam comment (and if I did I could delete it). Would it not make sense for those of us less concerned about spam to be able to set 'unlimited' as an option? We could always reduce it if we did get lots of spam, or at a certain point in time after writing the blog when we were sure no one would be interested enough to bother reading, let alone commenting!

The problem would be that many people would set it to "Unlimited", half a year later they'd lose interest in blogging, and then the spam would pour in unchecked.

A large part of the reason you're not getting spam comments now is because the commenting restrictions are so strict that it's not worth for the spammers to find the few blog entries where they can comment.

I could however imagine a "semi-unlimited" setting, which'd only be available only for Full Members and above (or for Supporters?), and would automatically revert back to "90 days" if the owner of the blog ever didn't log in for more than 30 days. Probably quite a bit of hassle for Peter to set up, but might be a nice improvement.

That does makes sense - and your possible alternative option would be a great idea if Peter could manage it. Or allowing unlimited only for Supporters (it would be a nice extra privilege to offer) and set it to expire if the member stopped their support. After all, someone bothering to pay the Supporter fee is likely to remain active during the period they've paid for, no?

Just raising this again as it's come up as an issue for non TP friends twice more recently - perhaps because people are reading more blogs while they can't travel at present? I would really like to be able to over-ride this as I wonder what other feedback I'm missing out on from people who've tried to comment and can't? I have all my blogs set at the maximum 90 day limit and have never yet had a single spammer comment so I do think there should be a way that regular, committed members could set their own limit - or none. Please

I agree with you, Sarah. I would also like to open up my blog to comments from non-members for longer (forever?). So if there is anyway to do that, without opening up the floodgates to spammers, that would be great.

OK I'm back again on this one! I have another non TP friend just getting around to reading my N Korea blogs and keen to comment but unable to do so. As she is someone I've approved in the past I can't see why being able to comment over a longer or unlimited time period would be an issue. And if I hadn't approved her the comments would need moderating, so if I were someone who'd lost interest in TP, which I understand is the thinking behind the time limit, I wouldn't bother to approve so if she were a spammer the comments would never see the light of day. Please please can we make this possible for supporting members at least - I really don't see what the problem is

I am surprised that you and I (not counting the possible spam guy) seem to be the only ones interested in this. Since we have to approve comments from non-members, I do not see the problem. I would appreciate some response from the higher powers.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has wanted to comment on older posts and couldn't. You visit a blog and it seems polite to comment. When you're times out, you can't and it's frustrating and feels a bit rude even though it's not your fault.

Sarah's comment about having to be approved would take care of spammers but not people who appear out of nowhere (like me) and want to comment. It certainly would be better than the current situation though. Certainly deserves consideration.

When does the 90 days start? Can you do an edit and have it start over again?
