It's 4th of July weekend in the USA........anyone of us USA travelers doing anything fun around the "states" this weekend?......virus or not........don't forget your mask!

As for me, not really. The Resort that I live next door to is launching fireworks less than a quarter mile away from my condo at 10 pm. So That's my excitement. The rest of the time I'm at work. Extra hours on a holiday weekend in a tourist town for me.

Finalizing plans to take a rail trip across the U.S. that begins July 18. I'll take Amtrak's Empire Builder from Milwaukee (Chicago has just imposed a 14-day quarantine on arrivals from several states, such as Georgia) to Portland, Oregon, then rent a car to visit Mt. Hood, Bend, Crater Lake and Eugene. I then fly from Portland to Sacramento to board the California Zephyr to Denver. I had planned to travel on the Zephyr all the way to Chicago but decided to get off in Denver to visit family and to avoid quarantine issues in Chicago. The Sacramento-Denver segment, crossing the Sierra Nevada and the Rockies, is the most scenic. I then fly home to Atlanta. I have more domestic trips in the works. In December, if borders reopen, I plan to travel overland from Senegal to the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire. I've been to Senegal and Guinea-Bissau but not the others.

Planning a very quiet Fourth at home. Everyone around here has cancelled the fireworks because of the latest virus spike.

We're still holding on to our reservations in France late September and October but suspect we'll have to cancel because they won't allow us into the country even then. It only gets worse here because we have so many virus deniers. Reality seems to be a problem for a lot of people . . . :(
