Hi there just looking for a bit of advice.

I am hoping to travel to Fiji and backpack/Island hop around for a month using a mix of hostels and the bula pass, wondering if anyone else has done this and the best way to go about it. I have never backpacked before and want to get the best and safest experience, I don't mind being on my own but I also want to meet people.

I don't necessarily want a full itinerary for the entire month but I do want some sort of structure/plan so I know where I am going and doing each day.

I have seen the bula pass from "awesomefiji" and I will probably use that for the first 14/15 days to get around, see as much as I can and get used to the place, then do the next 14/15 days on my own staying in hostels and such.

Is there a sort of intro tour or guide where I can meet people, do activities and get accommodation all in one or is this included in the bula pass?

What should I expect to take with me apart from clothes? And what is the best time of year to go?

I want to do activities such as snorkelling, spear fishing, surfing, hiking and more but don't want to do some of them on my own, will there be other people doing these that i can meet along the way?

I apologise in advance I'm a rookie at this.

Hi. Welcome to TravellersPoint. I notice you haven't filled out your Profile Page here so we don't know where you are traveling from nor your passport status. It would help you get better answers if you would fill out the Profile Page and give us a little background. Knowing your travel interests would give you more useful suggestions of things to visit while traveling.

I'm assuming you're young since you are doing the hostel thing and also assuming you are aiming at a modest budget for your trip. If this is not correct, you may want to change that too. In other words, help us help you. Thanks.

Welcome to TP; enjoy your time here.

I can tell you that you don't want to do snorkeling or spear fishing on your own, it is not safe. I knew a young couple who owned a restaurant down in Mexico, husband went spear fishing one morning and his body was found late that afternoon, he had drowned even though he was an experienced swimmer, snorkeler and diver. He left a young widow and a grieving family.
The hostel people might know of a guide, otherwise check if there is a local dive shop, they can usually arrange that sort of thing.
