Related to TP rather than travel - I was looking back through a few old posts (mainly because a newer member here reminds me very much of an old member [OldPro] who eventually got the boot) and there were lots of contributions from some very active members who seem to have just disappeared (the thread was three years old and about travel styles, cruises, sales tax and tipping!). One was Goodfish who has just magically today re-appeared (welcome back!) - but there are a few who seem to have vanished - Andrew Mack, Wizzmor (who did make a brief comeback a year or so ago), Hasbeen and one or two others. Does anybody here know what's happened to any of these? [I do recall Piecar decided to cancel his membership after typing under the influence.]

I have been thinking the same!

If you're from Virtual Tourist, the forums were much more active and more Eurocentric. Days go by here when there are no questions I can address and I know some other members in that situation. I also find blogging much more time consuming than writing Tips and the Tips were more visible thus more gratifying. Here more people seem to travel outside Europe which makes perfect sense but for those of us who aren't familiar with Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, etc., there aren't a lot of questions we can answer. I suspect some people just moved on rather than trying to adapt. I hope they found a cyber home someplace.

This is a tough year for travel anything because of the lockdowns off and on all over the place. That may have also had an effect. I know one former member whose husband was quite ill. There may be others in similar situations.

I think the lockdowns will have had an effect - I know some keen traveller friends who say they are spending less time on travel websites and forums because the constant reminders that they can't travel right now depress them.

And I too find blogging, especially writing up old trips, much slower than the VT tip writing, although I enjoy it. I know I can now also write tips/reviews here, but there's no way to get any interaction on those. Members can't comment on the tip, star it or show any other sort of reaction, so it's impossible to know if anyone is out there actually reading them!

The more interactive a site is, the longer people will stick around imho and the more they will show their presence. If they have nothing to say, or nowhere to say it, they'll drift away or become passive observers. So maybe it's down to us who are still around and active to make sure there's enough content to attract and keep others?

If I were to give Peter a 'to-do list' (somewhat cheekily!) it would focus on improving interactability (is that a word?!) Clicking on photos within blogs to star and comment on them; commenting on and starring reviews; threaded conversations in blog comments; even more emphasis on highlighting great content. I rarely see featured blogs for instance - it would be great to have a 'blog of the day' (or week if that's too much to ask) that we would get an email about or a pop-up on logging in. And what about a 'member of the month' featured at the top of our home pages? I've had the same (nice) member photo on mine since they were revamped.

And yes, I know Peter's only one guy and all the above is too much to ask. So what could members do to liven up content and highlight the best? How about those who moderate blogs for featuring, and the same for photos, posting links in the forum to their personal favourites, and the rest of us joining in with great content we've spotted? I'd be up for that!

I have been slogging along recreating my VT travelogues here.

I never much liked doing tips on VT. It was much more work than just writing about the trip. So now, I have to go back and put the tips back into the narratives. I have also been attempting to find the original photos that Peter imported among the 30 thousand that I uploaded to VT.

It is just as well that I am doing it primarily for myself because not much notice is taken except for an occasional starred photograph.

So far I have done 1950, 1964, winter 2000-2001, winter 2002-June 2007, Fall 2007-Winter 2011, and Spring 2011 to 2020.

Exactly! I've not participated in the word association thread but at least it gives members an excuse to visit the forums and contribute in some way.

At the beginning of lockdown we had quite a lot of 'experienced' ( I was going to say 'old' but then realised that isn't quite right!) members adding some interesting things to the forums - those picture quizzes, news threads and that sort of stuff. Even that's dried up now as we're all getting a bit fed up with C-19 and the impositions we face.

I have put together the odd travel quiz or two as powerpoints in the past but they really need to be done live - it sort of defeats the object when someone can just Google all the answers.

If any established members have any quizzes, websites or whatever to amuse us all, I'd be keen to see what we can come up with; that might keep us all going for another month or two?!

Here's an A to Z multi-choice quiz to keep you amused for ten minutes!

Aha, another Wanderlust subscriber! I've been doing those quizzes and sharing them on the VT Facebook page. I'm happy to share them here too if anyone is interested :)
