Finding mapped photos

Travel Forums System Talk Finding mapped photos

When I joined TP from VT and had thousands of imported photos to map, I was helpfully given the following instructions by Peter (posted in the forum):

By the way, on the topic of geolocating your photos. I think the least tedious way of doing this is actually through the map not through the photo management area.
To do this:
1. Click on the Map link in the main navigation
2. Click on the link to Photos that appears in the top left. You will see a lot of thumbnails of your photos on the left. You can click on "Hide mapped photos" to do exactly what it says

3. Hold shift while clicking on multiple photos that belong in the same spot as each other
4. Click "edit placement" in the info window that appears on the map
5. Either use the address search functionality or enter in latitude/longitude if that fails for whatever reason.
6. Hit save.

I'm now trying to go back to find some mapped to a specific place. As the place name used by the TP mapping system isn't always what I would have expected (for instance, many of my Newcastle photos are mapped to 'Quayside'), I want to actually look on that map, but I can't work out how to access it. The main navigation changed with the revamp to the site and now the only map link I can find is to my travel map, which only helps if I'm looking for photos mapped to a destination included in one of my trips - which I'm not! Any ideas please?

I gave up on the VT photos long ago, but this looked possible until I tried it. It says Click on the Map link in the main navigation. What exactly is the main navigation? The only thing I can find takes me to My Travel Map. That's fine, but then it says to Click on the link to Photos that appears in the top left. I see no link to photos. On the top left there is a line of vertical buttons with icons translated as:
Add a new trip
Show stats
Embed your map
Share your map
Export your map

That is it. No other links; no other icons; no other anything. I've tried it on all the different maps and none of them have a photo icon or link.

What am I missing here?

The TP page has changed since those directions were given and I can't get back to it. Maybe that is part of the problem. Peter also gave me a link to the photos that he uploaded of mine, the tips and the city pages. I don't have the photo link anymore.

I mapped all my photos so long ago that I don't remember now how I did it. All I remember that there were two ways to do it, and I found one better than the other. It was a long tedious process. If I go back to my home VT page it says that in January 2017 I had uploaded 36,344 photos.

I can get to my photos in two different ways - one is by clicking on the upload photo link and going to Manage, and the other is by going to the Featured photography and going to My Gallery. The My Gallery photos are much larger and I think I remember that was the way Peter recommended to do it. But I found the photos too big to easily map them. We did get a URL hack so that we could get pages of more than 10 or 50.

The VT photos already have as a part of the name, the location. So I would take a page of photos and click on all the ones taken in the same place, and do Shift Edit. This opens another page to edit the photos in.

Because if all the photos listed were of the same place we could (and still can) map the first one on the page and then auto-copy the map to all the photos on the page. We can also autocopy the tag and the date the photo was taken.

Then after I mapped those photos I could close the window and it would get me back to my original page. I had to unclick the ones I had mapped or I would get them back again.

Unfortunately you can't really index on the locations even when they are mapped. That is, I cannot ask for all of the photos taken in Paris. I can get all the photos taken in France and then alphabetize the map location within the country. But if I have 1000 photos taken in France, and only 200 were taken in Paris, I have to page through the 10 pages of France photos to find the ones taken in Paris.

What I did after I mapped them was that for photos taken in the US (and I had about 14,000 photos taken in the USA), I tagged them with the state. That was pretty helpful. And any photos that I added since 2017, I tag with the location. Most of the countries I had few enough that I didn't need to tag them. England is an especially difficult problem for me because VT (and possibly TP also) has some locations listed as England and some as UK.

Peter also imported 10700 tips, and I have managed to locate most of them where they belong.

Yes, exactly - that's my problem. The new navigation doesn't have the option to access the screen that showed our photos alongside our maps.

I can remember the hack (you add '&count=100' (or whatever number you want) to the URL) but that only gives me a longer list of photos - helpful for searching but not what I was hoping to find.

I tagged most if not all of my VT photos as I edited, including with location, so once I get the full list of photos for a country, say France, by using the above hack, I can then filter by tag, but if I omitted to tag the place I'm now stuck. With that previous 'photos plus map' view, I think I recall that I could zoom in on a place and see all photos mapped to it, which gets around the issue of differently named places. As you rightly say, England/UK is a particular challenge, and as it happens it's some English photos I was trying to find on this occasion

You can still access the old map https://www.travellerspoint.com/member_map.cfm and that still has the "Photos" link: https://www.travellerspoint.com/member_map.cfm#/photos

(Purposefully not linked, since the google maps interface is limited in the number of usages; but as long as it doesn't get heavy traffic, the old instructions should just work.)

A hint for the future: When I mapped the VT photos, and also when I map new photos now, I always tag them at the same time with the name of the location. Sometimes I add more detailed tags with keywords. A photo of Karlsruhe palace would, for example, receive the following tags: "karlsruhe karlsruhe_palace". It is much easier to find and sort photos by tag, for example during blog-writing.

Thanks Sander, I'll try that :)

And Kathrin, I've learned my lesson and these days I always tag with everything I might need to be able to search and find, but in the early days of sorting my VT photos I was less thorough

Me too - at first I didn't do anything but map the photos. I learned better.
