I think after no one has responded for an hour or two it is perfectly acceptable to use search terms, which can be quite challenging. Otherwise we might have to wait a month for someone who happens to have been there to stumble on the game. I’d rather keep the game going, we will get better at making the Google aspect challenging as we go.

So I googled it and it is...

I'm pretty sure that sums up how you're NOT supposed to play the game.

Well - I have never been to any of the places which have been pictured up to now - and I still haven't. So I really have never had a chance to recognize anything. So if we aren't supposed to google for the answer (which everyone else seems to be doing), then the things that are pictured should be something that many of us should have had a chance to see.

I made a count of the places so far, how many have been recognized (either from having been there of from having seen pictures) and how many have been found by googling. It's about 50-50, which I think is pretty good for recognizing. I myself have found most by deduction and googling.

It has become a custom (and indeed was intended), that the poster of a place adds a clue when his place has not been found out in a reasonable time. So I suggest that googling is free as soon as the place has not been found without a clue.

You say that it is half recognition and half googling. But from my perspective there was zero recognition. And I perceive that the people participating have all been traveling in somewhat the same places. When I answer the quizzes about whether I have seen the mountains or castles or waterfalls, there are large areas of the world which are a blank to me because I haven't traveled in Asia at all and I haven't been in Eastern Europe. OTOH, there are lots of places I have been that are less familiar to you - I've done a lot of traveling in the Caribbean and the U.S. and a little in South America.

What is a reasonable time? I don't stay on here every day and I don't get notifications on this thread (because I don't want them). Given that people are in different time zones - probably not on at night whenever night is where you are. So do we need to wait 24 hours?

How long before the person that set the problem have before they give a clue?

I've been back through the first 12 pages of this topic. I would say of the 20 places in those 12 pages I recognized one of them and got the correct country but I didn't remember exactly where I had seen it. Eight of the places, I had been to the country but had not seen that specific thing. Which means I had not even been to the country in 12 of them. And at least 10 of the photos were guessed before I even saw the photo. There was one where I had been there (John F. Kennedy Plaza in Dallas) but I apparently overlooked the monument in the photo. Of course on my first visit to Dallas in 1997, I completely missed Reunion Tower. So I guess I am just as bad at this as I am at guessing the faces of people in a trivia contest or remembering song titles.

Many people won't read the forum as frequently as every two hours. Being a global forum, most of us are going to have an eight hour outage somewhere for sleep, aside from work, travelling, or real life.

Not knowing the answer isn't really a justification for playing on different terms.

When no-one knows, generally the question setter has decided to give a clue. If we're going to stray from that and start using Google, it should be at a generally agreed time. Personally I think Google has no place in quizzes, ever, and that's certainly universal in pub quizzes in my country.

Well at first I thought it was Churchill or that it was the OBX. But there's no statue like that on the OBX. So I googled it and it is Sartre. and is called Windward at a place I never heard of in Lithuania

You forgot to mention the place Curonian Spit but you got the country and the bonus points with the statue so I have to give to you. Curonian Spit is a Unesco heritage area and an awesome place with great scenery and fantastic food;)

Next photo is yours.

As for this debate on how to play the game, this thread is really just meant to be a bit of fun. Showcase some photos, highlight some destinations and get people taking;) The pictures as I see it are like clues so if you can piece it together on Google it is not nearly as bad as a straight up reverse image search. People should also feel comfortable asking questions. If you see a photo that looks like it is from a certain place ask if it is from this country or this area. It adds to the clues. This is not necessarily a trivia game of either you know it or you don't a bit detective work can add to the fun of the game :).

I think you are being unnecessarily strict. This is a game. It isn't a pub quiz. It isn't Jeopardy. It isn't like lying on your resume and saying that you have an MD when you only have a year of community college. You have been disparaging of people's methods several times in this game. I think you ought to give it a rest and just let people play.

I'm sure you know what this is, but what country is it in?
