Some of the homes here are very basic...

And around the town there are signs of the movement of lots of earth. The second pic I posted shows this,:while there's more to be seen here...

Wrong state too, not in Queensland.

Am I right to assume that 'major earthworks' = mining? In some of your photos there appears to be a mine lift shaft tower in the distance.

Yes, the photos make it clear that the town is more or less surrounded by mining.

Not Lightning Ridge...

There are no major overburden mountains there as in these photos.

LR is first thing that came in to my head when thinking about mining in Australia. I have a opal from there in my necklace that gramps had mined in the early 70's :)

Ok. There are some hills in Coober Pedy, aren't there? :)
