I'd probably start with the west coast for several reasons, mainly the waterfalls in Yosemite will be at their peak (remember to plan around our Memorial Day holiday, the last weekend in May), most schools are still in session (some get out mid to late May) so not much family travel and you would be avoiding our fire season in California. Also San Francisco usually sees several big conventions in September and October. If you do keep the car in SF there are several hotels along Lombard Street with free parking such as Cow Hollow Motor Inn and Columbus Motor Lodge, among others. Otherwise turn it in at the airport and pick up another when you leave SF.
Didn't know you had seen LA, OK then just drive on through it heading north avoiding rush hour. Some people try to "drive around" LA but since it is 120 miles wide, not counting "greater Los Angeles" it seems kind of stupid to me. Check "sigalert.com" for traffic reports or KNX 1070AM radio.
