2. Showing a firehose of content leaves it open to spammy content. And there definitely is a fair bit of that that pops up in the blogs.

How about a firehose of all (non-password protected, set for "Listed on") blogs by "Full Members" and above (plus featured/followed)? Members who only blog still get to Full Member, right? (edit: yep, I see respected members who've only posted blog entries and photos.) While most blog-spammers only post a single entry, and/or get caught pretty swiftly, before reaching Full Member?

This'd also take care of the "testing the waters" issue.

A lot of the spam will actually automatically get flagged. I'm thinking I'll just not include anything that has been flagged. This also means that if you see some spam that somehow bypassed the automatic checks, then you can immediately flag it and no one else will see it until checked by me. Considering only limited people can flag posts, I'm happy for flagging to have that kind of impact.

As long as we are open to changing things, a little bit of SEO in the source code would be much appreciated. I've noticed that if I search the internet on a couple of key words from my blog titles such as "epicurean odyssey" or "east asian immersion" my pages often show up quite highly on Google searches. However the words "travel" or "blog" doesn't seem to give my pages any assistance at all, I assume because they are not in my titles. The search engines are definitely picking up the pages, they just don't seem to recognize them as having anything to do with travel.

On this, it might be worth starting a separate thread for anyone interested in improving their blog's SEO. But some short tips..

- hidden content will not do anything to improve the SEO in any significant way. It's too open to abuse and Google just doesn't buy into that.
- at a basic level, consider the name of the blog and the subheading as setting the theme. Definitely the words you choose in your title are the most important ones in your blog entries. You can also help things along a little by creating subheadings which have a few keywords in them.
- the final big thing in SEO that really bumps up rankings is having relevant links back to your blog entries. This is why spammers post on Travellerspoint, because they are trying to build links back to their websites. You get some links automatically through your profile on Travellerspoint and other places which certainly helps, but getting links from other domains really is key to bumping up the SEO authority of your site. Just don't go spamming other places in an attempt to do this.. :) One very simple thing that can really help is to interlink your posts frequently with good anchor text on the links.

There are possibly things I can do to improve the SEO of all the blogs as well, but the biggest part of it really comes down to how and in-depth the content is and how links are pointing to your content. Google is actually very hard to game these days.

Anyway, if you want to, you're welcome to start another thread on blog SEO and I'd be happy to help with any tips. I think some others might be interested in that side of it too.

I'd definitely be interested to follow such a thread and pick up tips for my blogs here and for my new WP blog too (don't worry TP friends, I'm not deserting you, just adding another string to my bow!)

I was lost at "SEO".

If I search for a general string on Google such as "Sinterklasstreffen 2019" which is the title of an entry in my "Belgium" blog. I get anything to do with Sinterklaastreffen and can't see any link to RP.

If I include the same string in double-quotes the Google search drops to 4 choices and the TP is is at the bottom.

Maybe SEO would be great for Google searches......

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation - how you maximise the chances of a web page showing up in search engines - all search engines, not just Google, but yes, you're on the right lines :)

Ah now I see. I read your Liechtenstein blog. I wasn't there long enough to see past the banks and the huge holes in the ground where a new bank was going to be built. I had imagined Vulgaria and was faced with Bank Hell.

;)

Ok folks, got this sorted pretty fast :)

Check out the new toggle on your home pages! You can now switch to "All Posts" and see the latest blog content.

You will get occasional floods of content from one person - such is life with a stream like this. Adding extra logic in to deal with that will just complicate matters right not. Regardless, I think it's a nice addition for anyone wanting to explore the very latest.

It is currently limited to 25 posts (and only since I implemented a change yesterday, so it will take a day or two to get there).

Oh, and I've updated the header image so it will now select one of 10 random photos.

That's great Peter, and thanks for the change to the header image too. Mine had stayed the same ever since the new design came in and while it was a good photo by one of my friends here, I was getting a bit bored with it!

I was there looking at the code right next to it and decided what the heck, time to find some fresh images here :) Lots of nice ones to choose from in our gallery of course, though the choice is limited by the very wide format. Anyway, hopefully 10 random ones will keep it fresh for a little while.
