This Is A New IP Address

Travel Forums System Talk This Is A New IP Address

Still fairly new but I use a fair number of different IP addresses - though I'd expect to use even more when travelling.

So logging-on from a different IP (of different provider/country/area, unsure) and then having to get a verification e-mail with a code is just a real nuisance. This is the only forum I've ever come across that is so sensitive to changing IP address and I would question how useful it really is (given a hacker would need to know your password and the IP address e-mail check happens even if you get the password right 1st time!

I could appreciate the e-mail if the P address had made a few wrong guesses at the password before getting it right, but on right 1st time.

The problem that this is unfortunately guarding against is people re-using their username/password combinations. Other sites get hacked, and then hackers take over old accounts on this site that use the same information as on those other sites.

This is not theoretical, as there are databases with billions of compromised accounts easily available, and we literally had hundreds of accounts taken over like that before this check was put in. And yes, Peter is very aware that it's not ideal for travellers, who can be expected to have new IP addresses all the time, but there's just not a whole lot of other measures which can be taken to stop this problem.
