To me it was a very exciting place.

Longyearbyen had a frontier feel, guns (because of polar bears) left outside bars (because it's all miners with nothing to do but drink), snowmobiles instead of cars, wild desolate landscape.

Ny Alesund was a quiet scientific settlement.

Did a boat trip into the Magdelena Fjord, surrounded by glaciers calving, very atmospheric.

Sadly I didn't get to the Russian settlement.

For living there, I'd say it's a wild place that traditionally peope don't stay long. Guys come to work in the mines and I think the average stay is 2 or 3 years. Six months darkness means high suicide rates. The Norwegian government have been working hard to normalise the community, encouraging families with kids to settle there so it isn't just a male frontier town. I think the cheap flights with Norwegian have done a lot to open it up too.
