Travel Forums System Talk Help with TravellersPoint

Greetings to You traveller!

I consider myself a traveler and have been an active member for more than a decade in the hospex communities like HospitalityClub, BeWelcome, HelpX, Trustroots and Couchsurfing. I recently discovered TravellersPoint and as it looked to me like a community for travelers I joined. However, after joining, I wanted to understand better what exactly TravellersPoint is so I read the About section at
I still have some questions and this is exactly the reason why I decided to ask here.
On my profile I see sections like "Travel Helpers", "Friends", "Spread your travels", I read their brief description and I still haven't understood what exactly is possible to achieve using them, what exactly are these sections for - if is possible for You to explain what is the purpose of these sections and what is the optimum way to use these sections, it would be useful.

I have also two questions related to technical aspects:
1) Is there a way to set my profile to be visible only to members of TravellersPoint that are logged in, so that Google doesn't index my profile and that people who are not members of TravellersPoint cannot see my profile? If yes, I would really appreciate if is possible for You to tell me where exactly can I find this setting.
2) Is it possible to customize my profile including HTML strings - for example, in the About Me section I would like to write a paragraph then include using HTML a photo from my gallery under that paragraph, then write another paragraph and then using HTML include another photo or video from my gallery under it. Is it possible HTML embedding into one's profile About Me section?

I thank You in advance : )

Hi -Adrian-, welcome to the site.

On the first questions.. the about page could do with some updating I think.

Travel Helpers are members who have volunteered to answer questions about their country. You can find them listed here . To be honest, this is not a prominent feature of the site these days. The main area where it is still used is in the forums. If someone starts a thread about a country then the Travel Helpers for that country will be notified via email.

"Friends" have been removed as of earlier this week. What you can do now is "Follow" people. If you follow someone you will see their blog posts in your home feed. It is actually functionally the same thing as friends - I just didn't like that naming any more as the real use of it is to follow people.

The Spread your travels page provides some ways to share your Travellerspoint content elsewhere.

1) Is there a way to set my profile to be visible only to members of TravellersPoint

Not at the moment, although I am strongly considering making this how all profiles behave in the near future. As for indexing by Google - they are currently only made available to Google once your member status has reached Full Member, so it won't be indexed for a little while in any case. To stay anonymous, the best option right now is to just use an alias, rather than your real name.

2) Is it possible to customize my profile including HTML strings

No, I'm afraid that isn't possible. If you want to write some content about yourself that is nicely formatted, etc. you can instead use a blog to do that. Possibly this is something I'd consider adding to the profiles when I update them next. I'm planning to do that fairly soon as they really need an upgrade.

Cheers, Peter

Peter, thank You for your time and useful feedback : ) From your words I understand that You are the supreme administrator. Because I also have a website -snip- and I like to help this community if I can because I am a traveler first of all, I provide below some feedback hoping You as administrator can find it useful to make this platform better or just keep it as it already is as a great place.

I opened the Travel Helpers page that You mentioned, where the helpers are listed, and if I click on a specific country to see those in that country currently listed I noticed that for those that have a profile picture their profile picture is not displayed - it looks like the website returns an error while getting their profile photo and is displayed instead only an ALT text like when the photo is missing. This looks like a bug to me - has that page been abandoned or forgotten when a recent update to the website was made?
If the platform is up and running and active, all pages should be functioning correctly otherwise to new members who are potentially truly interested in becoming a part of this community, when they see pages with bugs this may be a turn-off because at first impression it may seem that the platform was abandoned and not working anymore. If is so, it should be fixed as soon as possible.

""Friends" have been removed as of earlier this week."
If this feature was removed and the tab still appears in some places on the website this is a negative indicator because it conveys the same as explained above; maybe I am wrong, but from my perspective both of webmaster and of user, if a feature is being removed it should be removed from everywhere otherwise it may create confusion and misunderstanding in some users.

Though my next question is off-topic if considered the title of my thread, I take this opportunity to ask You: I assume You probably know hospex platforms like Couchsurfing, BeWelcome, Trustroots and the now defunct HospitalityClub; have You already had the idea to add a reference system that people can use to leave references to each-other after they meet in the real world? I am saying this because after looking at this platform and noticing the way it is already structured, I see great potential in adding this type of safety feature because on one hand for You as website owner You would attract even more people that are into traveling - and I am not talking about those that work all year long and then take 1 week vacation in some hotel somewhere, but about those who really travel several times per year for the pure pleasure to discover places and explore new parts of the world driven by their curiosity and desire to learn about foreign cultures and see how other people live in other parts of the world - and on the other hand the platform would offer a concrete feature to its members that enables them to safely meet, travel together and learn from each-other, in one word, that would enable them to connect, just like those very few hospex platforms that already exist and that I mentioned above. Have You already thought about this?

[ Edit: Sorry, no promos please. ]

Thanks for the feedback Adrian. Yes, in an ideal world things would probably happen as you say. Unfortunately I have time / budget constraints and that means sometimes things do not happen as quickly as you might have come to expect of larger websites.

Thanks for pointing out the bug in the helpers area. I'm not really sure what is going on with those images to be honest, but I'll investigate.

I have thought about safety features sort of like what you mentioned, but I don't really think this is our core offering and so am quite unlikely to add that any time in the near future.
