Hi all,
I'm very new to this site and was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to my question as I can't seem to find anything on the internet 😞.

My question is I'm planning a six month road trip around America and I want to ship my car over from England to use, but I'm unsure how to go about the insurance? Do i just inform my insurance company and pay an extra premium or do I have to get some form of vehicle insurance in America?
I hope someone will be able to help, many thanks in advance, Steve.

I'm no expert but I think there are enough obstacles that people don't do this.

I believe you would have to import the car, which means registering it and ensuring it meets safety standards.

Re insurance, I really don't think a UK insurer would do it. I've read travellers just trying to buy a car in the USA (temporarily) hitting a brick wall because to licence or insure a car there they needed to be a resident. I gather there are a couple of states where this is easier.

Would leasing or another type of long term hire be an option? I can't see shipping your own car both ways plus all the bureaucracy being cheaper.

This link provides much of the information you want:

Frankly, having personal experience of the cost & hassle of shipping personal goods UK>US, I think the cost of importing your car...and the time taken to actually do so....may well be prohibitive.

As Andy says, no UK insurer will cover your own car for use in the US and getting US insurance will be very difficult, if not impossible. US residency is a general requirement unless the vehicle is rented or leased.

I'm not sure if by 'America' you mean the US but UK citizens are only allowed a maximum of 90 days stay per entry. So perhaps you mean the US and Canada?

It would be very expensive to insure the car since you have no driving history in the US regardless of whether you import your own (check on import duties) or buy one here.
