Where should we go? looking for communities with other outgoing families.

Thinking of driving a van to south america, anyone done it with kids?

Have you reached out to groups and forums which are focused on this sort of travel and in this part of the world?

There are facebook groups for folks in Central America, maybe even groups focused on travel in this part of the world with children. Depending on the group, these can have tens of thousands of members ready to share all sorts of information. Forums devoted to a certain type of travel (overlanding, vanlife, schoolie, traveling with children, etc.) are also good places to look for advice.

Where should you go? Much of that depends on how tough your van is. Roads in much of Central America pose challenges to ill-equipped vehicles. Also, the road network (this includes all roads) isn't that extensive.

The "trail" throughout a very large part of Central America is easy to pick up and stay on - you should stray from it if you can.:)

we didn't know the english word for that type of travelling but now we do, thanks!

Going to reach out in those types of groups on facebook.

I think we will stay on one place at first for some weeks and then start driving around, either in Central america or to colombia. We dont want to put the kids in a bad situation so if the roads are really bad it might be too much of an adventure...

Google type search will give you several sources to look over. Sample search below:

I would keep an eye on prevailing weather conditions for the months you want to travel.

Also, taking a personal vehicle through several countries could be a bit of a hassle.

Good luck.

Have a plan for getting your car across the Darien Gap (most people ship the car in a container via ship).

As well as considering the Darien Gap issue, is the timeframe for this once the pandemic is done?

I seriously question the wisdom of taking an infant (baby) on a van trip through South America. Safety and security, including health, should be top of mind for every traveler; your family, too.
