Bali is such an amazing experience. My wife and I traveled there in 2017. If you can get past the long flight, the area is full of culture and awesome things to do. Some locations we were quite find of were Kuta, Denpasar, Candi Dasa. We also visited a beautiful beach that you have to check out called Kelingking Beach. Another must see is the Bali Safari and Marine Park. Get down there as soon as you can

Depends on your preferences, Bali has something for every taste.

Browse the TP guide on Bali, including the regency pages written by me.

Make sure Bali will be open for general tourist visit for the month you intend to visit. So check with the Indonesian Embassy located in your country. (Whatever it is.)

For some travelers the "Kuta Cowboys" are popular.

Get your Covid 19 shots before you go. Your airline might ask for proof that you have been vaccinated. Check the weather for the month you intend to visit.

Everything subject to change if this Virus Thing gets out of control.

I personally would not book any non-refundable flights or hotel rooms.

Good luck.

I'm wondering if it would really be cheaper to buy tickets and book a house on my own than to use the services of a tour operator and a hotel?

For me, usually cheaper to book my own hotel room and book my own plane tickets than to go through an agent.

Booking a house. Wouldn't this involve a lease and a longer period of time? With a hotel you can book a few days and if not happy with the selection - or there is little to walk to nearby - you can change hotels. If you book a house you will probably be stuck there for the duration of the lease. With a house, when you visit other places you probably will be leaving the house vacant for days at a time. Some home rentals may have you paying for electricity and water usage. Maybe hidden cameras in the bedroom too. (Just an opinion.)

Rare for me to book a tour ahead of time in Southeast Asia. Some hotels may have a tour desk. With a hotel you also have 24 hour security.
