The earliest Sunday train from London is the 1030 which arrives Whitby at 1536.

You could get a Sunday train from London to York at 0930, arriving 1132. Then get bus 840 at 1223, arriving in Whitby at 1416.

The disadvantage of getting train + bus on the way up is that unless you buy one-way train tickets you'll have to do the same on the way back.

All along I was assuming I was going the same way home as everything I found was that way.

I'm going to worry more about the finer details of what train to catch for when to be up there when closer to the dates of travel because...
You said it best/ book the tickets closer to then to have a better idea of the time tables those days and Google Maps is only good in theory but in practise, rail networks have engineering so, I'm going to worry about what time I should be arriving more closer to the time.

I'm assuming these Coastliner busses are cash only, no conactless payment;

I just have no idea how much it'll cost me to use them and if I extend, to use them for going further afield and back to Whitby.

I think it's £15.00 for York to Whitby rtn, I think.
I don't know how much Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay and back will be, I just know to bring cash money for the bus (unless that's changed now) and cash for the room key deposits.

Some shops might be cash only? So I guess I'm going to have to work out my cash flow situation with ATMs and stuff.

I assume Whitby has ATMs, but if it's anything like the Isle of Wight, I could be stuck out in a place with no ATMs.
...
I'd have to triple check what banks and ATM services are there, and if possible, a free cash machine, as those are my best friend as far as cash machines go; or I'd just get cash back at the supermarket. (They have a CO-OP, that should do cash back if I see no ATM).

If I see a free ATM, great, or a open supermarket for cash back, great.

You won't struggle to find a cash machine in Whitby - but why not just take cash with you to cover your spending?

Indeed, that's what I'm working out now, if I should do that.

Whitby has a beach, but that's the last thing on my mind about Whitby.

It very much is a 'by the seaside' sort of a place isn't it? - but to me, in my mind, it's me going to Yorkshire. (That's why I'm bummed but not disheartened about the hotel Sunday roast with Yorkshire puddings up in Yorkshire not happening because of Covid).
This is my trip to Whitby that just so happens on the North Yorkshire coast, but, the views look stunning enough from Whitby and where I'd be staying - I may or may not end up on that beach at some point, but I doubt it, tbh.
I love that it's in Yorkshire and on the North Yorkshire coast and has stunning views of all of that too, so that's cool.

I mean, I've been to Leeds once on a day trip with use of a megabus but, even though that was in Yorkshire (West Yorkshire) and I have been to Yorkshire because of it; I'm looking forward to the Yorskshire aspect of Whitby and; When I went to Leeds, I found out I was in West Yorkshire when I got there and had to pay for the bus ticket in cash and it said on the ticket when I used the local busses up there - and that was a little bit of a culture shock to me at the time, but I was young at the time and didn't think to look that stuff up back then; so that's how I remember the bus ticket and what it said and finding out I was in West Yorkshire and I had to use cash.
I'm still assuming however that these Coastliner busses are the same as I've had to use local busses in Crawley when I was out in a site working in Crawley everyday, and still, cash only - that was an annoying part of my commute; so I assume, outside my TFL bubble/world/normality/my UK/slice of the Kingdom, it's cash only no contactless payment.

Not going to lie, the fact that Heathrow is TFL and Gatwick isn't makes using one a preference for me.
Even if you have to use the airport for work and work locally coming in from London, just having a bus accept a piece of plastic or device on my person, makes one better;
Sure, Gatwick's past East Croydon on the Train and I'm in Croydon; but Heathrow's on the Piccadilly Line and has Oyster Card barriers and Gatwick doesn't, you need to use a ticket machine or desk and then board the train. Piccadilly is fast too and once you're there can come out anywhere on the network; touch in touch out - home for me; Gatwick is; ticket then touch in touch out once I'm in my town which means walking around train stations and bus stops; but Heathrow just means changing platforms until I'm home and waiting for trains, and two of the trains are on the Underground, so they come every 2 minutes, and the train that may take 20 minutes if no industrial action on Southern, is like a few stops from mine! LHR is great for that kind of thing, for me, and my choice if I had it.

Why not take a sunset stroll on the beach instead of sitting in your room watching TV? One of the pleasures of staying over is that you have the place more to yourself before and after the daytrippers. It's also along the base of the cliffs that you're likely to find Whitby Jet - better than a bought souvenir.

One of the pleasures of staying over is that you have the place more to yourself before and after the daytrippers. It's also along the base of the cliffs that you're likely to find Whitby Jet - better than a bought souvenir.

They had a made in China piece of badge engineered souvenir vampire stamped black coffee mug I see in shops there that I have my heart set on, and I plan on gifting Whitby jet for people back home who're into their minerals and costume jewellery and gifts from me and my travels - and, maybe something crafted out of Whitby jet for myself if I like it/think it's cool. Just have to see what's there when I get there.
As for that stroll on the beach and the sunset and the TV;
I plan to watch TV when it's dark and everything's closed, but with Freeview, I'd just stream something on my laptop and enjoy my pizza dinner or Chinese food or ribs and wings or whatever when I'm done for the day; Sunset to me I hope to catch by the Abbey; if I make it before sunset on day 1, then too. I'd love to catch sunrise at the steps though, so, I like that I'm staying at a place at the top of the 199 Steps too; that could be a cool shot to take.
Something about the silhouette shot of the Abbey I'd try and capture, and also maybe with any view of the the cliffs/town maybe from somewhere (IDK until I get there, but if someone knows the best views, please do point the way) etc... The Abbey and the town and the cliffs seem cool; as for a stroll on the beach; I don't know, does it have a good p.o.v of the Abbey and the horizon from down there/ maybe look up and see the sunset and the Abbey up above from down there?
If you can and does have a great P.O.V, then sure,why not? I'd do that.

I'm planning to do benches or cemeteries for those views; in my head; so I'm not sure a sunset stroll on the beach would be a good idea if I want a cemetery shot/view of the sun and the ruins and graveyard there.
Also, in the story Dracula by Bram Stoker, Lucy Westenera and Mina Parker (before she was married) used to enjoy sitting at a bench by the graveyard on the cliff and the views there, so, for sure I'm going to re read Dracula at some point for ideas of where's great to sit to see what over looking what where. Just do what they liked doing in the story.
This bench where you can see the whole town/Abbey Included; one that's named after Bram Stoker so I should be able to find,and use, if people aren't, I'd see when I get there about that bench and view and if I want to make it for a sunset one day I'm there if I extend or hang around enjoying Whitby on my last day if I only have 2 nights.

I honestly don't care how late I am coming home because I know when I'm down here, things are open and I'm good to return whenever/ 24/7 really I have ways to get to mine from the station in London; so I don't mind if I leave Whitby late if I can catch something to York and from York to London leaving in the evening; I'd do that for an extra day to enjoy the town that way.

About Dracula and Whitby,

When I read Dracula, I loved everything London about that story as they did things we still do today; like taking the same train to the same place to the same things etc; using the same stations, walking the same walks, doing the same activities we enjoy today etc, that aspect of Dracula fascinated me as they were doing what we do now but over a hundred years ago.

So; finding Lucy and Mina's favourite bench in Whitby for Dracula, sure - is something I want to do in the day too, when it's light out; like in the story maybe (I'd have to re read to get the details right) but, cliff, bench, graveyard, beautiful view; that's how the story goes, so if I found it and did it myself, would be cool.

>I'm assuming these Coastliner busses are cash only, no conactless payment;

It depends on the bus company and the bus itself. Some have card payment, some don't.

>It very much is a 'by the seaside' sort of a place

Not really. There's a lovely long sandy beach but it's a bit out of the town. Whitby is nothing like e.g. Southend or Brighton: there's no seafront as such.

You won't be able to take a shot of the Abbey from the beach. You'll be able to take shots of the cliff and Abbey from the clifftop opposite.

There's nowhere you can take a shot of the town & both cliffs.

> I'm bummed but not disheartened about the hotel Sunday roast with Yorkshire puddings up in Yorkshire not happening because of Covid

For goodness' sake! You're even not going until the end of October! There's absolutely no reason to suppose that Covid restrictions will stop you having a Sunday roast in the hotel!

>Just do what they liked doing in the story

Remember that 'Dracula' is a story. Novelists, including Stoker, rarely stick to geographical reality.

The 'Bram Stoker' bench is on the west cliff and only has views of half of the town and the Abbey.

>I don't mind if I leave Whitby late if I can catch something to York

The only way you can 'catch something to York' is to either take the bus or the train (with a change in Middlesborough). Neither will allow you to leave very late. The last Whitby>York bus leaves at 1745, arriving at 2007 so you can catch the 2119 York>London (arr 2350).There's no train to York via Middlesborough between 1558 (arr 1917) and 1942 (arr 2235, much too late for the last York>London train).

Any difference in route and journey time between 840 and 843; and I thought Coastliner was the name of the bus company that ran those busses.
I also see an express bus, is that a different company, Coastliner Express?
How much is what bus and do you know which is best for York - Whitby on a Sunday.
Best as in fastest/takes contactless etc.
And what is the difference between the 840 and the 843 or is it same way, one comes and then the other and so fourth.
