England...

I remember when I went to Bournemouth thinking it was just West of Eastbourne.
...
I was in my mid 20's then.
I thought Bournemouth was just West of Eastbourne...
So I took the train; and bought the via East Croydon ticket because it was cheaper... And I thought it was Eastbourne way and that Clapham Junction would be going back on myself from Thornton Heath, so I thought I'd take the East Croydon train because I thought it was on the way and cheaper.

Like 3 hours later and I see Southampton Airport and I started to worry a bit, transferred somewhere; probably Southampton, transferred to another train.
They had regional accent there and it seemed like a big enough station, but, I just changed trains there and can't remember catching the name of the place, just passing Southampton's airport/learning Southampton had an airport to get to it.
...
Went home, took a late train, day trip; and... I saw a train calling at Clapham Junction (one train, no change or nothing, one train one seat, etc) and learning that my Thornton Heath via East Croydon ticket was good for this train and it worked out better coming home using Clapham Junction rather than East Croydon even though one's cheaper; the network either cut me a solid or I found a hack to get home or whatever, but; it was 1 train to Clapham Junction then I changed platforms for one of the last trains back to Thornton Heath.

A tip for anyone travelling from 'South of the River' if you're ever faced with via East Croydon or via Clapham Junction for Bournemouth, for the love of God take via Clapham Junction and pay the extra, it's so worth it, and not that much more, but it's one train from there and non of the trains break up and change/so much easier via Clapham Junction and it's quicker, even if East Croydon is a cheaper option.
Wished I'd knew where Bournemouth was when I decided to go.

I had to tell my friend what Whitby was because she had never heard of it before, but she showed me that music video Simply Red shot there and I had heard of Whitby so showed Whitby on my computer.
My friend was wondering about going to Sheffield, I was wondering about going to Whitby and we were maybe looking at going to both; before we decide on a place we'd both been but not been together, Amsterdam.

>Waiting for another 843 suggests there are more than 2 busses a day to Whitby on their Sunday service

If you actually read the bus timetable you'll see that the buses pause at Malton: they don't just stop for a minute then move off again.

So if for some reason you don't want to ask the driver about staying on the bus (which is the obvious and sensible thing to do) just get off and wait at the 843 bus stop (which may well be the same as the 840 bus stop).

Quoting goodfish

Andy, lovely shot of the lake. Looks like a place i'd enjoy lacing up a stout pair of shoes to explore!

Best network of paths anywhere, in my biased opinion! :)

You ever been to London goodfish?

As I said in post #49:

I've never thought of London as a "world" city - and yes I've been; twice...

I meant to ask if you knew what world city was? (It's not any city in the world).
I of course didn't first coin the phrase, but it's real thing regardless of how you feel, London is a world city, New York City is a world city, Birmingham is an English city, Philadelphia is an American city; look it up or trust me on that.

I know the biggies have been referred to as Global Cities but neither that nor World Cities are commonly used terms as it's not that important to the vast majority of us. If anything, we might call an especially large one a major city.

OK, I'm bowing out of the thread now. Carry on....

When I went to Birmingham, it taught me to get to somewhere before 6 pm if I didn't want a ghost town, nothing in Digbeth was open, and this was the summer months, sun was out around 7 pm, ghost town.
Digbeth actually looked like West Norwood to me if ever West Norwood was a ghost town; so it had that going for it.

That night I got back to West Norwood as I was living up the hill from it then, and around 1 am, everything, was open, it was business as usual. I'd never take that for granted again, and is why I personally love a late home coming, for London at night; passing a Boots open until 11 pm after a town closes in England is a beautiful thing.

When I went to Bournemouth, things started to close around 5 or 6 pm, but since I already saw our country's 2nd city be a ghost town, thought nothing of it and just hung around with my friend until taking a late train home.

Global City is nowadays a more common term than World City, but either way they're concepts that cause much disagreement among geographers because there are so many measures and definitions which can be used.

Generally they include London and New York, sometimes the list stretches to Tokyo, HK, Paris, Shanghai and onward. LA is only occasionally included.

I'm not sure what use the idea is to us. Big cities can have similarities. Okay.

The most shocking thing about NYC to me was it felt like I was back in London and this was out of nowhere for me, I thought it'll be like Philadelphia.
I never knew anywhere else could do that (make me feel like I was back in London again) until I went to Manhattan. I didn't even think America could do that until I went to NYC, I thought it'll be like Philadelphia, not like London; that was a shock to me.
It was like I was in London again, but in America; so it had the US High Way Code and authorities and was over 3, 000 miles away but I'd never forget that day seeing NYC for the first time since I was very much so Fresh Off The Boat, but it felt like being back in London for the afternoon that day.

Love America and England though, both beautiful places; I'm glad London is different to the rest of the country, like I'm glad NYC isn't like the rest of the US.

Being of one, and suddenly seeing another, I could see why natives would argue global cities are alike, because they have more in common than with cities in their own country.

Still, I'm glad I've booked Whitby, honestly, it looks amazing, not too busy, not too dead, great looking town, imo.
I personally love how the water's there with the shops and how it has the cliffs and from the looks of the videos I've seen in determining my desire to go see it, the views look amazing and I hope to love the place while I'm unsure of leaving England (others seem to, I'm just looking at other countries going back into lockdown)..
I'm not even phased by the sea of people I see in Goth Weekend up in Whitby in previous years on YouTube as I've seen worse and still had an amazing time.
To me, I just plan to walk to my hotel with my bags regardless of how congested it may be, without thinking nothing of it as I grew up knowing how to walk through crowds like that on Saturdays.
The only time I feel congested is Notting Hill Carnival, but it's so fun, the literal sea of people and wait to get anywhere becomes worth it imo.

I want to go to one hotel in Land's End called The Land's End Hotel, just so I could look out into the ocean from there as I remembered that I liked that. The thought of being able to do that in Whitby also dawned on me yesterday and got me all excited to go gazing out from that rocky coast on the cliff there to.

If I'm honest...

Looking at Whitby and North Yorkshire's Coast with Robin Hood's Bay and looking at Land's End and Cornwall and Dartmoor and the Yorkshire Moors...
They both have;
Stunning views it seems.
Both are near moors (Dartmoor/Yorkshire Moors)
Both claiming bootlegging fame with places I've heard about in Cornwall and Robin Hood's Bay I learned about on the North Yorkshire Coast 5 miles under Whitby.
Both Land's End and Whitby are coastal with a rocky coast it seems.
But, they're completely different coasts with completely different bodies of water (Atlantic Ocean for one, The North Sea for the other) in completely different parts of the country; but I've been studying them for Staycation purposes and was amazed at the views of the sea both seem to offer as well as bootlegging.
