How long for South America?

Travel Forums Central/South America & The Caribbean How long for South America?

Hi guys,
My boyfriend and I are planning on going to South America next year and spending a few months travelling around. We don't have a daefinite date set yet but we're thinking of April because it ties in nicely with things here at home. Is this a good time to go over?

Obviously we want to see as much as possible when we get there so roughly how long should we plan to stay? Would 4-6 months be enough or should we make it longer?

And if anyone could give me a rough idea of how much we should budget to spend per day it'd be great!

I'd say 4-6 months should be just about right. If you're there (April-Sept) that will be through the South American Winter. The 2 times I've been to South America were both (June-August) and for me the weather was perfect in the North and Central parts and just fine down in patagonia. But then again Cold doesn't bother me, Heat does. In Patagonia I thought it was a cool time to be there because there were no other tourists there at that time.

The weather in Peru, Ecador, Bolivia, Northern Chile, Buenos Aires, the Galapagos, Iquassu Falls was excellent during the time I was there. In Rio it was very pleasant but noone was on the beach, guess it wasn't warm enough for beach scene, but very nice for everything else.

So if you like warm weather just plan accordingly. Like doing Patagonia before or after the middle of their Winter, or getting to Rio before or after their Winter, etc.

But if I were going to South America I personally would choose the same 4-6 months that you are choosing.

South America is a cheap destination, except for the Galapagos, some places (like Bolivia, etc.) are cheaper than others. But it is a VERY BIG area so transportation will either take a while or be a mojor part of your total cost.

By the way, which places are you planning to visit? Where do you want to go?

Yo, travel, how true.
4-6 months gives you long enough to see the main attractions without missing much. Of course you could stay out here longer but it depends on budget as you said.
I spent as follows roughly:

Argentina- food 5 quid a day ish, accom 6 quid
Uruguay - roughly the same
Bolivia - in 1 month i spent about 400 pounds! It is stupidy cheap, amazing food, accom about 2 pounds a night, food 2-3 quid a day
Peru - after bolivia, its a shock, especially cusco, about 3-4 quid accommodation, and 5 quid eating in a day.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks lads, that's been a huge help.
Personally I hate the cold and Winter may not be the best time to go so I might look into postponing it until Spring when it won't be too hot.

I knew it was cheap over there but I never realised it was that cheap! I don't feel so bad about my meagre savings now :)

We haven't really decided where exactly we want to go yet, just that we want to see as many countries as possible. When we get to planning it in more detail then we'll decide what/where we'd like to see and what we can skip.
Any recommendations are more than welcome.

Hi guys,

On the topic of "how long to go to south america" for, my friends & I were thinking of going to SA for 3 weeks - 1 week in Argentina, 1 doing Inca Trail & 1 on the beach in Rio. Do you think this is too much to do in 3 weeks? Should we just concentrate on 2 places?
