Yesterday my spouse saw an article about "hel-hole in the desert" and said that that would be cool to see. We are not planning an trip, at least not yet anyway, but I got curious and do little digging, read TP Travel Guide, google, etc.

It sounded like it would be difficult to travel independently (without tour company) in Turkmenistan but that they would do trips to Darvaza from Khiva (Uzbekistan, where I wouldn't be needing an Visa). But Khiva was 10 hour train-trip away from airport..

Have any of you been in Darvaza? How easy was it get to really and what about Turkmenistan, any independent travelling? Money, expensive or not?

Keep in mind that this is just casual conversation

Looks like an interesting place. I have NOT been there but it was not difficult to find YouTube videos with a search.

(I used the phrase below to find videos.)

"The Real “DOOR TO HELL - GIANT Hole in Desert Has Been on Fire For Over 40 YEARS..."

Good luck.

Edit. Clicking on the "Hamburger Button" upper left, locate the Turkmenistan selection. This place is part of the general info.

I watched some videos too and had already looked in to "behind the Hamburger Button" before I started this thread ;)

It does look like a interesting place to visit! :)

No I haven't been around that part of the world yet. It's on the list when I have enough time and money! Probably after Mongolia, Göbekli Tepe and maybe Timbuktu because because it rhymes with Kathmandu. (I have been to Kathmandu along time ago.)

Good luck.
