Hello,

Anyone planning on backpacking around South East Asia when restrictions ease?

Myself and my partner are hoping to travel to South East Asia in October 2021 and travel for 9 months. We are from the UK and have not done a trip this long before. We have delayed our trip as long as possible due to the pandemic, as I'm sure is the case for many people, but are hopeful that restrictions will have eased enough in Asia by October time. We have been holding off booking flights and other things in case circumstances change. Ideally we had planned a route including Thailand, Nepal, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia...

I was hoping to find other travellers who are maybe in a similar situation? It would be great to hear from anyone planning a trip to South East Asia soon; feel free to get in touch to discuss travel plans!

Any advice is also welcome.

Thanks in advance!

~ Ellie

Hello.

Nine months is a long time. Do you intend to work while on the long holiday? If so, that is not always as easy to do as you think. Also, salaries, if you could even find work, can be lower than you working at a fast food restaurant back home. (There are some posts on this forum that discuss working in foreign countries. Take a look at them for advice.)

Right now, for some of these countries, it seems that virus infections are rising. Below is a website that covers several of the countries on your list. ASEAN NOW used to be called ThaiVisa.

Read up on visa requirements. Also medical hospital insurance will probably be required. This insurance has to cover Covid 19. Some countries may require a period of quarantine. You pay for this hotel stay, pay for exams and usually restricted to the hotel grounds. So, look before you leap!

Good luck.

Maybe start thinking about something closer to home if leaving in October is important. (Or, pray for a miracle!)

Hello, Seems like your planning a fantastic trip, As i am retiring next year i am planning a similar trip but travelling alone which is pretty scary , Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, then finish up in Goa to relax for a month or so,
Have been lucky enough to travel in some of the places you will be going to , travelled in Malaysia alone a couple of years ago, found it relatively easy , would recommend a few days in the highlands, and George town ,
Vietnam one of my favourite destinations, people are so friendly and living costs like most of Asia are CHEAP,
Nepal With great hikes and great people again recommended,
Thailand, another fantastic place, but would give the main holiday destinations a miss, The best beaches in the world are here,

Most of my travel has been with a travel group called Intrepid, so you travel with a group mixed ages from different parts of the world, fantastic way to see the world, and gain a little knowledge of travelling off the beaten track ,

Good luck with your planning will certainly keep a eye on your travel plans

Happy Travels Ronnie

Unless things improve my guess is that you can forget about visiting this part of Asia this year without quarantines and other hoops to jump through.

I do hope things will improve but I don't expect things will be back to normal until sometime next year.

Hi Ellie,

It's a great place to go, but unfortunately Covid restrictions are going to cause you a lot of headaches!!
I've backpacked independently through all those countries (and more!!) so can offer some advice and tips. The good thing about SE Asia is it's cheap and comparitively easy to travel through many countries without much hassle.

Good luck

Now is a really bad time to come, even if you are fully vaccinated. Hopefully 2022 will be better

We've been working at home to save up for the trip, so hopefully won't need to work once we arrive! Thanks for the tips and link!!
