I have learned much. In the future I will be using Expedia only to see the times of the flights, then book from the airline directly.

Booking directly with the airline is by far the best idea.

I always use https://www.skyscanner.net/ to check flight dates, times and fares. The site has been around since 2003, is UK-based (thus covered by UK consumer rights law) and accurately lists pretty much every flight worldwide.
