Things for you to research before deciding whether this idea is possible:

1. Will you be able to find an insurer to cover vehicle + caravan? I suspect it will be *very* difficult indeed. If you do find an insurer the cost is likely to be huge, if not actively prohibitive.

Unless you're willing to ship vehicle & caravan to SA (very expensive indeed) and fly over yourselves there's no point in doing any further research if you can't get vehicle insurance cover (a legal requirement in many countries) or the cost is prohibitive.

2. I assume you are a UK citizen? Many African countries/parts of countries are on the UK government's 'do not travel' or 'only travel for essential reasons' list (check on the official link below) e.g. Algeria & Niger. If you drive through them your travel, health and vehicle insurances will automatically become invalid.

3 You will need a visa in advance for some countries you'll theoretically travel through (e.g. Angola, Nigeria). There are also a variety of Covid-specific entry requirements in force at the moment, varying from country to country. The link above details both types of entry requirement for every country.

4. You need specialist personal travel & health insurance for such a trip. Ordinary travel insurance won't cover it. Travelling without health insurance would be madness so you'll need to research providers and check premiums. The cost is likely to be very high indeed.

5. Many roads in African countries are not the same standard as those in Europe. Are your vehicle and caravan really up to such a trip?

Would it not be a better (and, I suspect, considerably cheaper) idea to fly to SA and just hire a camper van?

From what I've read, I don't think there's a safe driving route at all, let alone towing a caravan. Did you have a route in mind? I gather the best option is broadly down the west coast, and that has both bandits and bureaucracy through Western Sahara and Mauritania. Unless someone knows better?

We were hoping to start in Cape Town and go up as far as we can via Namibia,Botswana,Zimbabwe,Zambia and maybe Tanzania, but know the roads aren't great there. Will look into hiring an off road trailer/camper,but as with a car,its difficult across borders with insurance etc.
Thanks for the reply.

Quoting kevsastaine

We were hoping to start in Cape Town

Ah that's a bit of a different thing to "London to Cape Town" :)

>We were hoping to start in Cape Town

That's an entirely different question to your original >Just trying to find out if possible to take our caravan to Africa to do a road trip?'!!!

The only way to get a caravan from the UK to S Africa is to either drive it or ship it. Shipping it will cost a fortune (a relative has just shipped half a containerload from the UK to the US and that cost many thousands of pounds).

Or do you already have (or have access to) a caravan in Cape Town?

Regardless of whether you can afford to ship the caravan and hire a car or decide to hire a car + caravan or hire a camper van in SA you will still face the same issues about border crossings with hired vehicles.

As a non-resident, buying a car (& caravan?) or campervan in SA is neither straightforward nor a speedy process. This page gives details of what is required:

https://www.gov.za/services/driving-licence-driving/apply-traffic-register-numbert

As a non-resident you'll also face difficulties in getting insurance cover. Although I believe vehicle insurance isn't compulsory in SA imo it would be madness to drive without at least third-party cover.
