The 'outskirts' of London is called Greater London.
Look at https://www.booking.com for hotels, guesthouses, b&bs and hostels.
Look at https://www.premierinn.com for an excllent budget hotel chain which does not list itself on booking.com (all other UK budget hotel chains do).
Many hostels now have private rooms as well as dorms. Look at https://www.hostelworld.com
