When reporting posts, I wonder whether we could have a text box to add explanation? As with the "report member" function.

Sometimes things don't cleanly fit one of the three reason options. The ability to add remarks would let us explain what we're trying to show the moderator.

Or is there a reason not to do this? Would it be difficult to add the text to the report that the mod sees?

I think that's a really good idea.

As an example: occasionally I report posts because they are direct copy & paste from another website (i.e. plagiarism). Just clicking 'duplicate post' doesn't really explain the issue. I think it would be helpful for moderators if I could include a link to the copied website.

I've been asking for this for years. Some things just don't fit the reasons in the drop-down.

So, there must be report box that isn't available to everyone?

Not newbies, but I think "respected members" onward all get the same:

A "report member" button with a text box. This goes to Peter.

A "report post" button with a drop down selector of three reasons. Promotional, inflammatory, duplicate. This goes to the mods of that particular forum (and I'm sure Peter) in the form of a numeric flag on the screen menu (bit like the one for new messages).

FWIW, as a mod, the meaning of "Duplicate" is always clear to me. If I have any doubts, 10 seconds of using duckduckgo will find me the plagiarised content myself.

Promotional sometimes can benefit from an explanatory message, though - when the spam is subtle (e.g. astroturfing, or when the promoted service is hidden among a list of other names).

I think people may be more willing to flag posts if they could add "I'm not sure about this one because..., could you take a look?" rather than appearing to be firmly stating it's wrong.

Absolutely agree, Andy.

It's sometimes very difficult to know whether to report or not because the three options simply don't fit the scenario.

The 'explanation' box could just be supplementary to the existing 'reasons' drop-down. I don't think anyone would want it by itself or compulsory to fill in.

'Duplicate' doesn't mean the same as 'plagiarised'. I'd always thought it meant a post had appeared more than once in a thread or forum.

It's 'inflammatory' that imo causes the most difficulty. Some things are obviously inflammatory e.g. swearing/overt personal attacks/politics/religion but in other cases I do think the option to briefly explain would be useful to moderators.

An alternative might be to add the name of the appropriate moderator/s to the thread so they could be messaged about posts which don't fit conveniently into the three options. But just adding an explanation box like the one for 'report member' seems the most straightforward to me.

I agree. If I am not sure if it is a inflammatory or not, I just click Promotional. But some of the promotional posts are inflammatory too, if the poster are trying to scam money.
Maybe one of the options should be Scam?
For example when someone is trying to sell passports etc?
