Travelling Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Tajikistan etc.)

Hi, all!

I'm planning to travel through Central Asia (Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, etc.) in one long trip within the next few years; the itinerary would at least vaguely resemble one through the Silk Road (unfortunately, some countries might have to be skipped for various geopolitical reasons; and I think I'll be visiting Mongolia on a separate trip as both of its borders are basically inaccessible). I may end the trip in the Caucasus. I am somewhat ambivalent about attempting this completely alone as a young woman--the only people I know who have even visited the rather isolated region are men. The vast distances and lack of transport are at least a little daunting.

Has anyone here been to one of these countries and can tell me about their experience? Or is anyone planning to visit in the future? If it's too difficult alone, I am thinking of maybe doing it partly through packaged tours--which I dislike in general, due to cost and their barriers to immersion. But if anyone has one to recommend, please let me know!

I've used a little independent tour company called Lupine Travel, who specialise in unusual places. Whether you use them or just use their website for ideas, it may be worth a look.

Thank you AndyF! I'll check it out.

Out of curiosity, which of their tours did you take? How'd you like it?

I used them for a Chernobyl trip, which was great, but not at all the same thing as their longer tours.

I should declare that a friend knows the owner. But they'd be the first place I'd look for ideas.

I used a company called Kalpak travel for my trip to Uzbekistan and they were excellent. I believe they do some of the other Stans too.
