we are flying from uk to Nz with a stop over in Houston on December 31st. We have never been to the states before, so thought why not break up the trip.

We have basically 2 full days, I’ve a toddler and am aware it’s over New Years (not sure if this effects what’s open). Any recommendations on where to stay? Anything New Years related fun activity going on? What’s a must see - American feel if you only have a couple of days. Haha

For your toddler look into Frolic’s Castle, Color Factory, Childrens Museum Houston, Herman Park train. There are lists of Christmas light displays and toddler-friendly NYE events online, I’ve never been in Houston over NYE. Montrose is the hippest neighborhood. Rice University has a beautiful campus.

I thought of Kemah which is the coastal area of Houston - there is a boardwalk and also you can always walk on the beach for free.

This is a list of New Years things to do with kids. https://kidventure.com/blog/top-houston-kid-friendly-new-years-eve-events/. I don't know that fireworks will be that good for toddlers, unless your internal clocks are off for 12 hours, which they may very well be.
