I think you can comfortably explore Italy in about 3 weeks. -snip-
Two weeks includes Milan, Lake Como or Lake Garda, Dolomites (the best), Venice, Florence, Rome and Naples and surroundings. If you add a couple of days and take into account that the itinerary above is a bit tight, you can fit about everything into the three weeks. Even special places like Burano, Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast, which are some of the most beautiful parts of Italy. In four weeks you'll have plenty of time to relax.
In summer, be aware that it's already very hot in Italy. If you can, travel in late spring or early autumn. July is only suitable for beaching, otherwise it is very hot for sightseeing. Plus, it's very crowded everywhere.

[quote=Sailor-1]I'm planning a trip through Italy from May 21st to June 23rd. I'm a single guy semi-retired and I love Europe. I'm from the east coast of America and recently returned from a sailing trip in Croatia and Greece. I'm a non-smoker, healthy, active, and have no baggage or hangups. I'll be in Palermo, Sicily for 3 days before joining a sailboat for a week. From Sicily, I take a train to Naples for a second week at sea before heading to Rome and Florence for my final two weeks. I'd love to meet up with someone and share experiences or have dinner.
