Hello,
I am travelling in June 2023 and are trying to plan a route between Glenfinnan Viaduct to Mallaig and google maps is saying the route has restricted usage or includes private roads.
Can anybody tell me is this route okay to take or should we take an alternate route. I was hoping to be able to put the car on the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale.

Thank you

I have no on the ground experience, but looking at openstreetmap, the issue is probably with taking "Glenfinnan Viaduct" as the starting point, since there's a private service road leading right past the viaduct, while you would of course have parked your car at the car park right alongside A830 and walked to the viaduct from there. The actual route itself basically follows the A830 for the entire way, so should by all rights be absolutely fine to drive.

To get google maps to not show the warning, try setting "NTS Glenfinnan Monument" or just "Glenfinnan" as the starting point. If the warning then indeed disappears, that should confirm my hunch about what's happening here.

Yes you can absolutely drive the public road from Glenfinnan to Mallaig.

You just can't drive right up to the viaduct, you need to park in the NTS car park and walk.

Glad to see your planning is taking you up to see the good stuff. :)

Thank you so much Andy, going this way will save us travelling over the same ground.
