I don't know the slightest bit of Spanish and decided to travel to Mexico. Will I face challenges exploring the country?
Travelling to Mexico without Knowledge of Spanish
Hello.
For any first time visit to a country it makes sense to learn how to say hello, thank you and good bye.
A phrase book or an app on your phone/computer can be helpful.
Do read up on safety before you book your flights. Read any travel warnings or cautions that your country may have for visits to Mexico.
From my country:

I have been to Mexico a few times but many years ago. I grew up watching old cowboy movies where sometimes there was Mexican greetings and phrases being used that I picked up.
I think cruise ships still visit Mexico ports. But for any city you are interested in read up on any "no go areas" is advised.
I don't think you will have too much of a problem getting what you need.
Good luck.
We also don't speak spanish, but we travelled to so many spanish speaking countries. But you have to learn at least a few phrases: please, thank you, the numbers one to ten, left and right, cheap and expensive, and for sure how to greet.
It depends what you're doing. Staying in a resort hotel in Cancun, going on trips to Chichen Itza and Xel Ha, you'll just want to show the courtesy of being able to say hello, thankyou, etc.
On the other hand if you're travelling like locals then yes you'll want a deeper ability to communicate. There are plenty of free online resources to get started and you'll improve your ability during the trip - I'd dive in and make it part of the adventure.
Use Google Translate on your phone. It talks.
In addition, please learn the words suggested above like please, thank you, hello, good-bye, etc. It isn't hard. Type them into Google Translate on your phone and have it translated to Mexican Spanish (yes, it's different from that in Spain), then have it speak the phrase or word to you. Do it several times until you can pronounce it and remember it. Takes very little time and will make you trip much more enjoyable.
Also, follow the advice to check where to go and where to avoid. It can make a serious difference in your experience. Crime in some areas is rampant but you can easily avoid that with a little research.
Enjoy your trip to a beautiful country.
